HDR looks much dimmer than SDR on my TV

This TV can only do about 300 nits peak in both SDR and HDR. Because HDR generally focuses more on the lower light range and uses the higher nit range only for highlights, content typically looks dimmer than SDR at the same peak brightness. This is because SDR brightness is relative to your display, while HDR brightness values are generally absolute, with only the peaks changing according to the capabilities of your display. This is true for any display with similar peak brightness between SDR and HDR, not just this one. But most good HDR displays have significantly higher peak brightness in HDR than in SDR, so it's not much of a problem.

My Samsung 6 Series 40" TV displays HDR content a LOT dimmer than SDR content. Is there any way to fix it? And yes, I know that HDR tends to look a bit dimmer but It's AWFUL on my TV.

Display config (only brightness related settings)

Mode: Movie (modified)

Brightness (backlight): 20 (max)

Content brightness: 5 (max)

Black frame insert: Off

Gamma: 0 (default)

Are you talking about HDR content from a games console / TV channel / UHD BluRay disk or is this from a PC (Windows)?

 

Windows HDR has and always has been problematic. My PCs look dull and washed out when using my Philips 42inch Panel but works perfectly with my LG OLEDs.

No I mean native content, from a streaming service.

Nothing much you can do, unless you change to OLED TV or high-end series QLED.

The Samsung 6 Series is mediocre for watching HDR movies. It fails to display a wide color gamut and doesn't get bright enough in HDR to make highlights stand out. It has a good contrast ratio, but the black uniformity is just decent and there's no local dimming feature.

But most good HDR displays have significantly higher peak brightness in HDR than in SDR, so it's not much of a problem.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.
