GTX 1650 transitions to GDDR6 due to "industry running out of GDDR5"

Nvidia appears to have released a new GTX 1650 graphics card without really telling anyone, although it's probably not one on many wishlists. The new variant of the GeForce GTX 1650 uses GDDR6 memory as opposed to the original GDDR5 spin.

 

We reached out to Nvidia to give us an idea as to why this card has suddenly popped into existence, and the response was suitably succinct.

 

"The industry is running out of GDDR5," an Nvidia rep explained to us, "so we’ve transitioned the product to GDDR6." 

I'm starting to wonder how will the switch to GDDR6 affect the performance of the 1650 and make it more like a 1650 Super but also what will people that have already bought the card think about it. In the article it mentions that the g;u has lower clock speeds, I'd imagine this was potentially done to lower the performance and make it match the standard 1650 so it would still be different to the 1650 super and so that customer don't return their cards or "riot" because of this.

What I'm wondering is why does the 1650 even exist when the 1650 super has been a thing for so long now. Kill it off.

Nvidia simply has too many SKUs.

Because it's currently the fastest 75W graphics card. It's a small niche but important enough for Nvidia to keep alive.

i saw somewhere where they claimed it would increase performance by around 6% if my memory serves me right

Irrelevant,  I bought an X once, the very next year they bought out a better one for the same price. 

 

Products aren't going to stop getting better just to protect the feelings of a few insecure people.

I thought the 1650S is a 1650 with gddr6 in the first place.  It appears not.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

This is getting really confusing for us, consumers, because Nvidia keeps pumping graphics cards that keep overlapping performance with older hardware releases.

Haven’t they always done that though?  Compare an Nvidia 710 to a 9800gt

The 2080ti is still quite a bit better than 2080S but the 1660S is prety much the same performance as the 1660ti.

so  5 or 6 different GPU's with 3 variants of each over  2 years is too much?   This isn't the 90's anymore,  Consumers no longer have to settle for a shit card or spend their life savings on the best.   We have options in the middle.  Options that get us into most games adequately without breaking the budget.

There's a difference between having an adequate amount of products on the market and overcrowding the market with products that cost nearly the same. Take the 1650 and 1650 super, they are essentially within 20$ of each or the 1660 and the 1660 super, like what's even the point, even if your budget is very restricted 20$ won't make huge dent in your bank account nor will it break anyone's budget.
