LTT Folding Team's Emergency Response to Covid-19

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

This event has ended and I recommend you guys head over to the Folding Community Board for any general folding conversation.

Possibly of note; the 500.000 points "minimum participation requirement" might be a bit of an issue now that F@H has quite a bit of trouble coming up with enough WUs to hand out --- and especially for LTT-forum members who signed up DUE to this event, as new donors don't get the so-called Quick Return Bonus (which can be 10x the base-credit for a WU) until they have 10 WUs total, which at the moment takes forever due to the WU shortage.

My "Elastic Folding" setup humming along nicely now. I'm using spot market instances on AWS. They are running in containers on ECS and g4dn.xlarge instance types with NVIDIA T4s. What is likely new about my approach is that more instances launch if the spot market price drops (right now it's at $0.15/hr) and instances terminate if the price goes up too much. Basically uses more power when it's cheaper.

I can't say exactly how well the system folds because, like all of us, it was waiting on WUs most of last night. I fired it up again this morning and it quickly grabbed a million points. I set up a budget in AWS so if I approach a threshold the system kills itself but right now it's very reasonable.

NICE! Do you know my tutorial on cloud folding?

Wanna help me getting your approach in there?

Send me a message when you are interested/have time ;)

I'm having issues getting WU, the work queue is pretty in the same empty state.

I've tryed from 2-3 systems but it doesn't start.

How is it going to you?

Up and down.  Largely up on GPU work, largely down on CPU work. Needed a restart as neither was getting work the last hour-ish on either machine. Have more work for now.

Hands down AMD 3900x. Beats the 9900K in everything for a lower price. Unless you are only gaming and nothing else.

can't go wrong with AM4. The last AM4 cpu will be put out at the end of this year, 7nm with more optimizations apparently.  After that socket type changes with the 5nm processors being made.

I have a i9-9900K OCed to 5GHz and honestly I'd go for the 3900X now. I pretty much only game, but I've been thinking of streaming or something like that and the 3900X would be far better for anything other than gaming.

Thanks for the input guys.  I've been out of the build game for so long I couldn't pin point.  I have two friends who also said to go 3900 with one of them using it now and like me prefers extra cpu horsepower to multitask with other things.  I like to do astrophotography as well as virtual homelabs to learn new things for my work.  This seems to be a sound decision.

Made my parts list for now.  I left the gpu with my current one.  I think I will upgrade that later, just more concerned with everything else.

Signed up.  Something I had been thinking about doing but never got around to setting up.  Saw the LTT video and decided to get plugged in.  Fortunate enough to be working from home, with a work computer.  So my home pc (RTX 2070, i9 9900k) can fold uninterrupted all day.

@AstroAlan I will be upgrading to the 3900X soon-ish for my main workstation. You can get a higher-end board too from the money saved vs the i9. Literally every review on youtube suggests the 3900x is far superior for everything but gaming. Even in gaming it is only slightly behind and you will be GPU-limited most of the times anyway.

So guys, a question:

Currently I am folding with a 1080TI @ 60% Power, I still have a 1070TI lying around somewhere. Would putting the 1070TI into the same system as the 1080TI increase my overall PPD or decrease is because of shared PCI-E Lanes and stuff? I am only using my GPU to fold, I deleted the CPU slot altogether.

It should be fine and F@H will see it as another slot to assign work to.  Anyone can feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

More cards is more PPD.

I have two 1070ti's running simultaneously (Project ITNOS), and as long as they're still running at the same frequency, I'm not able to measurable any loss in PPD due to a PCI-E saturation.

Go for it.  If your CPU is idle it should have no issue managing the GPU work units in tandem nor should it have any bandwidth restrictions.  From what I know about the PCIe bandwidth unless it needs to talk to your CPU a lot like video games do for player data and textures to name two you should have more than enough.

x8 on the top slot, x4 on the bottom I believe (I have a PCI-E x4 Wifi card above the EVGA FTW2 card ) Both cards estimate the same PPD within a few thousand or ten thousand depending on the frequency and WU assigned. But both cards pumped out about 750K very consistently for six months before the C22 and COVID 19 updates.
