LTT Folding Team's Emergency Response to Covid-19

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

This event has ended and I recommend you guys head over to the Folding Community Board for any general folding conversation.

hello i have some question about folding at home.(sorry for the english i'm italian)

the work is separated by cpu and gpu

the efficency of the work is the same on the cpu and gpu or the cpu work better? cause i got 5 pc that i can make run but my energy contract give me only 2.5kw/h

a cpu use like 100 watt max and a gpu twice as much or more (vega56)

can it be more efficence making run 5 differnts cpu rather than 2 cpus and 2 gpus?

again sorry for the english

Today I paused my fah client (I never do this before), install some new Noctua 3000rpm Fan on my system (for better cooling), turn computer back on, then client just resume perfectly... But... then server didn't like my 4 Hours result T_T

Still waiting another slot completed to see if server can accept it...

Work on another slot is accepted by server, maybe its just a bad luck though

Spoiler

So 11 of my 20 Ryzen 3900X rigs were running overnight, but as they're all headless Ubuntu 18 Servers, it's hard to check on their individual performance. Is there a software that can be deployed that can remotely monitor each F@H client, so i can view individual server performance and WU throughput?

I have basic server/hardware level monitoring deployed on the servers, so i can see when each server is folding at the CPU usage is at 100%. But it'd be cool to have some software that links up with the FAH client to give me individual performance figures.

Unless there's a site for that?

A full 24 hours and i earned 845K points between the rigs. I did make a change mid-day and had a cron script restart the client every hour to reset the WU wait counter.

Given my specs, is that a reasonable result for a 24 hour period? I'm struggling to find context.

hello i have some question about folding at home.(sorry for the english i'm italian)

the work is separated by cpu and gpu

the efficency of the work is the same on the cpu and gpu or the cpu work better? cause i got 5 pc that i can make run but my energy contract give me only 2.5kw/h

a cpu use like 100 watt max and a gpu twice as much or more (vega56)

can it be more efficence making run 5 differnts cpu rather than 2 cpus and 2 gpus?

again sorry for the english

GPUs are more efficient than CPUs. But every bit helps!

I'm using my R5 3600 with a GTX1080 Sea Hawk which tops out at 55C, not many CPU jobs but GPU has been pretty consistent, I'm getting something like 450 to 500K point a day.

Wanna see if I can find some cheap mining cards when I'm paid tomorrow to set up another rig.

What puzzles me is I get enough WU's for my CPU's but not for my AMD Radeon RX 580. Nothing, zilch, nada...

OpenCL is enabled. It's on Manjaro Linux. The folding client detects the GPU no problem, but still 'no suitable WU for this configuration'....

Three WUs today have a log which goes 99% then a second later the log says error no WUs available for this configuration.

What happened to the WUs I just finished?

Also lost two WUs when I reduced from Full to Light when the wife needed some quiet in the room, next time I will just pause the GPU... Be warned people some WUs fail that way!

The client does several things at a time, and starts trying to get a new WU a little before the current one is finished so that it's downloaded by the time it's over and it can continue straight away.

Good shout, I see buired in the logs the uploads.. hard to spot even with filtering.

Thanks for that!  Also an in depth log review shows I lost just one WU to changing to light.

Once you get the hang of reading the logs they are very useful!

Stable OC last year, does not mean that it will be stable this year too, especially with new WUs and new Core.

Lower your CC and MC.

The new FAHcore 21 and 22 are very sensitive to overclocks and very heavy on GPU. Try running stock everything.

I feel like something wrong with those numbers. That 24 hour average is x2 our score yet on the update we are far ahead??

the 24 hour average takes numbers from the last week or two. That's how averages work my friend

Hey, so I want to make another rig for folding when I'm paid tomorrow.

What kind of GPU should I be thinking about?

Memory doesn't seem to matter too much,

I know we need lanes, so probably two or three per system,

I think it just likes as many units as possible right?

I found a bunch of Saphire Nitro RX480s that were probably used for mining at £62 each ($75ish I'm UK)

Those have 2300ish units, 4GB GDDR5, 150W.

Should I get like 4 of those? Or two 1070's or something?

2060 is the best folding card when you look at production per £ unless you considered 2080ti cards.

Meanwhile, I'm considering sitting this one out tbh. Leaving the PC on all day to get one cpu WU and nothing for gpu doesn't make a whole lot of sense, especially when there's a ton of other people also not getting enough work and happy to pick up the one I'd not be doing..

Just keep an eye out for the next week or so, as the WU supply/demand will most likely level out.
