Twitch introducing subscriber only streams shouldn't come as a shock to anyone. It seems to be a clear attempt to incentivize those not opening their wallets to do so. Most big streamers couldn't keep up with full chat speed anyway so they only really interact with subscriber chat. So it's not a surprise they wouldn't bother using the new feature since it would just lower donation numbers more than it would raise subscriber counts.

Also it seems that even though some developers and publishers ToS disallow requiring viewers to pay, some have specific allowances for video streaming platforms such as YouTube and Twitch.

However, each of these video policies contains exceptions that might mean Twitch streamers are in the clear. Most of these center around partner programs.

Personally I will be interest to see how developers, and publishers respond to this, and whether, or not using this feature will have a negative impact on subscriber growth to channels. Also it's probably something for Like and the Floatplane team to keep in mind once the platform. It fully launched, and available to any content creator.

why is this a thing exactly? do people forget that Twitch is an ad supported platform? i turn my adblock off on twitch because i want to support the streamers i watch. if i can't watch them then they get no ad revenue from me.

Any streamer who uses this feature is not very smart tbh. Its more likely to drive away viewers and bar people from seeing their stream that have never seen them before. Nobody is going to subscribe just to see if a streamer is good so basically they are shooting themselves in the foot and ensuring that their viewership never increases.

Because streamers might want to have subscriber-only rewards, like bonus streams.  I do think broadcasters have to use this intelligently, though -- recognize that it's only for special occasions rather than a frequent part of their programming.

It's still a bad idea. You look at alot of the biggest streamers and alot of them got there because they didn't run any ads. This just is not good for viewership growth and likely won't have any significant impact on subscriber count.

Meh really was this needed. I can maybe see it for like a very big streamers at times as "private stream" heh for specific streams and such. But yeah, not a fan, feels like a TV kinda. Which I don't even have subscription since forever.

I really don’t get people who use twitch for this, just use normal porn sites like wtf Twitch cost money and is way too weird at that end of twitch.

If the video a person is streaming is of the personal game-playing created by their own individual playing, and that's the draw of the video, then I don't see how a game company can make restrictions over it.

 

It sounds to me like this goes back to the matter of software ownership and the sketchiness of EULAs, where a company doesn't have any leverage to tell people how they may or not use their products after they've sold them to the purchasers: If you buy a hammer from a hardware store, the manufacturer of the hammer couldn't say, after selling it to you, 'you're not allowed to use this product in a way that makes you money', or, 'you're not allowed to use this in a repair instructional video that people pay to watch'. Once they've sold it to you, they don't have any say over how or where you choose to use your property.

 

And besides, people are already making money off of their gameplay videos from these companies anyways by having ad-revenue on YouTube. And game review sites and video channels present gameplay footage on their previews, reviews, discussions, all for the purpose of being a commercial enterprise that makes money from them - and so viewers are paying with their data to see that content and the hosts of the content are being paid by advertisers from their viewers' data for showing that content. But, commercial review sites and video channels that show aren't being attacked by these game publishers.

 

Publishers thought they could tell people they aren't allowed to resell their software. Courts said software owners can just ignore lying publishers with their lying EULAs. The claim that people can't make an attraction out of their own property is just another version of that and I don't think there's any right for game publishers to try to tell people whether they are allowed to receive payment for their personal gameplay videos. I chalk this up to another example of how ignorable EULAs are.

Useful for after parties and private sessions but I don't see any streamer using this on any normal basis, it would be stream suicide tbh.
