Jony Ive Leaving Apple (but not really)

Jony Ive, Apple’s chief design officer, is leaving the company, Apple announced on Thursday.

He is going to start his own design business, called LoveFrom, along with longtime friend and fellow designer Marc Newson, according to a Financial Times report. Apple will be a client, Apple said.

It has just been announced that Jony Ive is to leave Apple and start his own design business

While at first glance this seems like big news, it's likely that nothing much, if anything is going to change as he's basically going to go from working for Apple, to working with Apple

“While I will not be an employee, I will still be very involved — I hope for many, many years to come. This just seems like a natural and gentle time to make this change,” Ive told the Financial Times.

 

What this could mean, is that Apple might actually start designing their products, in particular their laptops, with functionality in mind rather than making piece of art (which is totally subjective) then shoehorning a computer inside

The PowerMac G5s and early Mac Pros were a work of art.

 

This new thing still has me on the fence, I'm not sure how I feel about the looks of it. The handles seem nicer on the new Mac Pro, but they're also small...

The pre trashcan Mac Pro is, in my opinion at least, the best looking case of all time. You wouldn't believe that design is over 15 years old, it still looks modern today.

 

As for the new Mac Pro, I can't even look at it, the design literally makes my skin crawl

Agreed, I liked the G5 case so much I modified one and now use it as my main PC, fitted out with X99. I love the sleek, modern look of it.

 

New Mac Pro looks like it's a bit more functional than the G5 cases, though. I mean, optional wheels to roll it around like Dat Boy, optional railmounts for server deployment, it makes a lot more sense for the environment Apple intends it to be running in. I really want to mod one into a G5 or Mac Pro case, though...

I bought my 2009 Mac Pro with that very intention, but after I found out it still worked, I just couldn't bring myself to cut it up!

That's part of why I was so glad that my G5 didn't work, if I'm being honest. I had the dual PPC970 1.8Ghz model.

 

I did later pick up a newer G5, featuring a single PPC 970MP clocked at 2Ghz, this one just needs a new PSU as far as I can tell.

I bought mine as faulty, but it turned out it just needed the dust cleaned out of the heatsinks. 

I'm going to use it until it finally dies, which, considering it was on 24/7 in a recording studio for nearly a decade, I don't think is going to happen any time soon!

He has had immense design influence at Apple over the years. But he’s getting up there and probably realized that Apple isn’t the only thing out there for him. 

 

Considering he will still keep Apple as his biggest client, I doubt much will change. Especially because he has been training a whole team of designers to replace him.

Can confirm. Non chamfered edges on the handles were a massive oversight. The heaviest of the OG cheese graters were the Quad Core PowerMac G5. Those were truly 50 pounds, the lesser configs were closer to 30 ?

 

Also, technically the new MP handles are less integrated as they are screwed down rather than seamlessly attached (an upgrade imo) per the old tower Mac Pro. But, I know what you meant and you are correct ❤️

I sure hope this means good things. Keep the iphones mostly the same IMO, maybe reintroduce the headphone jack. Also, I would keep the macbook air pretty much the same as well. Hopefully though, this means apple has some different design language for the macbook pro series. I think 2020 will be a refresh year with a new design, hopefully that doesn't throttle and is still as beautiful.

They're not going to reintroduce the headphone jack.  And I suspect that whatever the MacBook Pro redesign looks like, Ive already has a hand in it.

Uh, the newer phones are actually quite a bit thicker than their predecessors.....and people didn't mind. I'm not saying that they should be bricks but at least make it thick enough so that it can be held comfortably whilst also packing in a big battery.

Uh, the newer phones are actually quite a bit thicker than their predecessors.....and people didn't mind. 

The XR is the only noticeably thicker phone in the lineup. And that wasn’t by choice, it had to be that thick because of the display technology used.

And people didn't really mind. The Galaxy phones also got quite a bit thicker over time and people didn't really care too much. 

 

A bonus with the XR is that the increased thickness also allowed them to cram in a reasonably large battery, which resulted in very strong battery performance alongside other things. I know battery wasn't a complaint for my brother in law's XR
