You will not believe it, it's only 2019 and we already have Dark Mode, already in build 74. What a time to be alive.

Ok ok, for serious now, better late than never right? It's here, but it's sort of hidden so you might need to enable it manually.

It isn't fully enabled just yet, but if you're on Windows 10, there's a way to force dark mode. It requires adding some text to the shortcut path, so you could totally have two shortcuts for Chrome: one for standard view and the other just for dark mode.

For this to work, you'll need to modify a shortcut file on your desktop. Here's what you need to do:

  • Right-click the Chrome shortcut
  • Add one space and "--force-dark-mode" (without quotes) to the end of the 'Target'.
  • Apply changes
  • Launch Chrome using the shortcut

Chrome 74 also brings the option to disable animations that might cause motion sickness for some users. It also changes a policy to block websites from opening new pages as you try to close them. Check out the Source link to see what else has changed.

Note that you might not have 74 on Play Store just yet, but if history taught us anything, you will get it in day or two.

Does Firefox have dark mode? I know it has a dark theme, but this is for websites.

 

 

Let's hope prefers-color-scheme becomes a real W3C. Right now these dark modes are really hit and miss. The Samsung one makes LinusTechTips.com really hard to read. For example it changes the read and unread symbols to the same color.

I’ve been using a Dark Theme with Chrome on my PC for a while. Maybe I’ll be able to remove it with the release of this.

Since I had Windows with dark theme enabled, it automatically replaced my current dark theme with new dark mode. 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

as I've read, chrome's dark mode is only a UI change, not for websites

I mean... I've had a "Dark mode" in Vivaldi since day 1... The fact it took this long for Chrome to officially have one as well, is insane.

Now if only every website would include a dark mode, that would be turned on if this setting was turned on.

 

Dark mode is the future, death to white backgrounds and burnt retina's.

Ketchup is better than mustard.

GUI is better than Command Line Interface.

Dubs are better than subs

I’ve had Chrome dark theme for a while on my MacBook. It is actually confusing because it makes it harder to tell when you’re in incógnito mode.

I just updated chrome on my pc. Dark mode turned on instantly after relaunch. Nice!

Enabling the flag in mobile Chrome doesn't do anything on my S9

 

I'll just stick to Firefox.

In that case you might need to force stop the app and then relaunch it. You got the 74 version, right?

OH HELL YEAH, I dont even have Dark mode official enabled on my W10 at home, but When I checked my "About Chrome", it updated to 74 and immediately switched to superior mode Dark Mode

It even changed the right click options menu (It's white in all other windows)
