Facebook secretly pays users for complete access to their data

Quote

According to TechCrunch, Facebook has been paying teenagers around $20 a month to use a VPN app called "Facebook Research" that allowed the company full access to all of their phone and web activity.

Seriously people's privacy is only worth $20 a month! Is this a joke or do people really not care about their security and privacy.

Quote

Facebook has admitted to TechCrunch that the app exists, and that its purpose was to gain insight on usage habits. According to TechCrunch, the program has been in distribution since 2016, and has been referred to as "Project Atlas" starting in mid-2018.

2+ years of this that's absolutely insane.

Quote

Instead of downloading the app through the App Store or via Apple's own TestFlight beta testing program, users were getting it through three different beta testing services: BetaBound, uTest and Applause. Those three services specifically ran ads on Instagram and Snapchat targeting a demographic of those ages 13-35, saying that it was a "paid social media research study." When signing up for the app, minors are prompted to ask parental permission via a form. One of the forms reads: "There are no known risks associated with the project, however you acknowledge that the inherent nature of the project involves tracking of personal information via your child's use of apps."

Only Facebook can in the same sentence say "There are no known risk associated with the project" and "The inherent nature of this project involves tracking of person information via your child's use of apps". The icing on the cake, targeting minors with this crap. Can Facebook get any worse and people any less caring about their personal info? Seriously selling out kids info for $20!

Can I cheat the system and get a second phone for cheap and do nothing meaningful with it? Some random pointless searches and fake activity for free cash? I'd probably leave it in my room or something so location tracking would be meaningless.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

If only, probably only pays if your account is active daily, though that could still be abused though.

I support a free market, so long as they are up front about it and it was properly explained then what's the problem?

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

The issue is that Facebook & Tracking could mean anything. Knowing them, some of it is going to be illegal information collection, but no one on the outside would have any clue about that.

This is really just them being evil, like always.

Do you know what was even more infuriating? "Onavo Protect" A VPN service that didn't disclose that it was owned by Facebook for years. I was warning people about it and it had to blow up sometime because now it says "by Facebook" next to it on Google Play. And to make matters worse, Facebook was shilling it as "privacy protection VPN service" without disclosing they owned it. And it funneled all traffic through that thing.

start creating an AI that starts doing what you do on a daily basis.

just track your usage habit for a bit and then you can let it do AI things

Sounds like the people were informed and signed up for it anyway. What's to be mad about?

Additionally, it seems like they weren't "selling out kid's info for $20". The goal here was clearly to buy peoples aged 13-35 info for $20/m. Which is probably a step in the right direction for Facebook.

I'm actually reasonably convinced that Facebook actually does do some legitimate research. This was most likely done, however, to provide insight on how to better target ads, otherwise they wouldn't have been willing to pay for it.

Also, am I the only one that reads the EULAs when they pop up?

Update: Apple bitchslapped Facebook's beta apps

Can Apple please just pull Facebook from the app store since they keep violating their terms. That would be seriously great Facebook needs to not exist anymore.
