Its the countries in the Five Eyes, all have expressed a vested interest against China. Its mostly co-ordinated by the US.

Don't really know about this particular case but we're really not that tech savvy as the world likes to make it look. 5G network infrastructure was cancelled recently because an idiot minister said we don't need it. Fast internet in general? nope. One of the worst networks in Europe actually. People are pretty blind eyed in general. When a chinese company bought Kuka Robotics everyone was like ooh awesome we're working with China we can help this poor developing country (we actually pay them "Entwicklungshilfe")  and this is such a great multilateral project. guess what the chinese did? they fired the whole german branch after the company "fusion" and essentially made it an all chinese company now. Guess that's what you call technology transfer... It's really annoying to see how blind people can be. There is also no regulation for foreign investors in our market. So they come in to buy up everything and people are happy about the money not realizing that in a few years every bit of useful technology will be "transferred" out of the country. China doesn't care about you and it doesn't cooperate. shame on you

Not really, there has never been anything found equipment wise, the hardware or firmware, that would make Huawei products a security risk. It's only ever been a preemptive move centered around the company being Chinese, not the products themselves being a problem.

National security is very much important but this has only ever been political affair not an actual concern with putting Huawei equipment in to networking infrastructure therefore introducing a potential vulnerability the Chinese government can exploit. If people truly think that is an actual risk then you have very low expectations of your national security agencies and the trained experienced professionals that operate the networks, blind unchecked and untested installation of equipment doesn't happen.

 

The security risks working with Huawei or similar Chinese companies is real but it's not about the equipment, there exists actual evidence of that unlike the fears of the equipment.

 

So rather than taking steps to ensure national security when working with these companies it was easier to just ban their use, by privately owned and operated companies might I add.

 

British Telecom for many years were perfectly fine with using Huawei equipment for their 3G and 4G networks, now suddenly they are not and I can assure you nothing has changed equipment wise yet they are starting to pull it out.

 

Was a scheme similar to our All of Government procurement process not possible to put in place to buy from these companies where equipment is purchased in bulk by that agency who handles all the contracts and communication, inspects the products and fulfills equipment purchase requests from local companies. You could also do the support through them cutting off all direct communication from the companies that use the products and Huawei etc. But I guess taking an already existing working model was too hard.

 

P.S. I hold no favor with Huawei products, they are cheap crap compared to other offerings on the market and support is bad. By bad I mean responding to a support request I made in Chinese bad, I can't read that argh. Their English support center is in Romania and the people employed very much are sub par trained in English so it makes thing extremely difficult. With all that I don't support just banning them but I simply wouldn't recommend them either way.

But seriously, most evidence (if there is any) is going to be kept away from the public for at least a long period of time or until someone leaks something. Ideally you would publish the evidence and out them right away but either nothing is there or they want to understand how to get around it first, or it's just more political BS from both sides just to try and rile people up.

Are you serious? All you could come up with is that they had interfamily marriage in a time when it was not know the adverse effects of inbreeding? I would hardly call that noteworthy.

Additionally, it might not be that FVEY knows for a fact that Huawei is working with Chinese officials to breach security, just that China has a long, proven record of going to great lengths to conduct intelligence gathering activities. Perhaps the idea is "better safe than sorry", especially when it comes to a big chunk of your telecom network.
   

Beyond that, atleast one telecom company in Germany (Duetsche Telekom) is looking for other partners so that they can appease AT&T and also satisfy their own security concerns. So even if the German government thinks it's silly, it looks like the Huawei phaseout will happen anyway.

I doubt Huawei would be a top pick for most if cost of initial purchase wasn't such a big factor, they aren't exactly market leaders in other aspects. I know they tried to nail us with extra costs afterwards, like extremely inflated SFP/QSFP module and cable costs. There was also the increased cost of installing the APs, before with our old installation company it was about $30 per AP to get them mounted and cable run, through Huawei which was a contract requirement it was over $300 and being that we have thousands of them you can start to see how the initial contract purchase price for the equipment is a bit irrelevant.

With all of that in mind? There are going to be cases where government cannot share sensitive intelligence info with the public. We might not like it, and under perfect utopian conditions, 100% transparency would always be present. But that's naive and not the reality we live in.

The NSA hacked into all of Hauwei's network gear and after a year of watching they said they couldn't find any wrong doing but to still not trust them

Its all different behind closed doors, but its the contradiction that matters. Theres Japan on the one hand, and Germany on the other having both done tests and found different results - obviously someone is wrong or they could both be right.

I don't know why this Chinese spying problem News going so big but not many people say about Microsoft spying on people, or Google tracking people location, or other big company give/sell people information to other company/government with out asking.

What an interesting case in social engineering.

 

When Volkswagen not so long ago were found to be using cheat devices in their diesels and using falsified information to market their cars, they were fined, forced to recall and many governments hissed their tongues at them. But not a single sovereign country in the "five eyes" committee or indeed anywhere banned them from entering any new markets and not once were they branded a threat to national security even when the engines are proven to reduce human lifespans. VW were smart to place manufacturing centres everywhere so any policy maker taking legislative action against them would have to deal with the losses of jobs in their civilian populace.

 

No such qualms with Huawei, their manufacturing and R&D are all pretty much in China (save for satellite sites near tech hotspots), whether or not they're aiding in spying it's open season against them. The more extreme the rhetoric the better.
