Denuvo anti-piracy 4.8 has been defeated again

Denuvo anti-tamper or anti-piracy protection has been defeated for the 4th? or something time according to a reddit that follows Denuvo (No I won't name it as it goes against the CS so I'll be sparse with my details, Mods any issues PM me)

I found only a single news story which is kind of sad about it and a few Russian videos which I can't translate

The Denuvo anti-tamper piracy tech is not exactly popular with a lot of PC gamers but it’s done a reasonably good job protecting new releases. The protection has become a little more robust with crackers taking longer to circumvent it with newer updates. This time it took three months.

Today it appears that the latest version of Denuvo which is dubbed v4.8 has now been cracked and the target has been Sonic Forces from SEGA. 

 

I'm happy that this has finally been done, it shows to the Triple-A publishers that Denuvo WILL get cracked and they're just wasting their money. They went on further to say about some games that could be cracked in the future

There are other titles said to use this version that could now also be affected such as Football Manager 2018, Injustice 2,  Star Wars Battlefront 2, Need for Speed Payback and even Assassin’s Creed Origins, although that also uses VMProtect as additional protection.

While these are big games, it's just showing more that Denuvo is unreliable and maybe publishers should consider looking into other ways of protecting their games.

Just make appealing online and/or multiplayer content. Just convince people to buy the game, don't force them to.

Didn't the EU release a study that showed that piracy didn't affect sales or something?

 

Why are video game publishers still trying so hard to stop it if it's going to happen anyways?

Let's hope that companies like Ubisoft remove the DRMs once they are cracked so I can play Ac: Origins on higher settings.

I think even Denuvo themselves push this as "It will get cracked but it will get you through the release timeframe" which considering how their model is to sell as much as they can as early as they can, publishers find useful.

 

So if it takes anywhere beyond 2 or 3 weeks they consider that a win.

The best way to stop piracy is increase access and ease of use to consumers. Just look at what Spotify has done to music piracy; of course, it will never go away completely, but the average person no longer wants to go through the hassle of downloading mp3's of questionable quality from some unknown site and then having to manually sync them to all their devices. It's far easier to just get spotify and access all of the music you want for ad supported free or with an ad free subscription across all your devices. 

 

It seems a lot of the games frequently locked down with Denuvo and other DRM are ones that are not accessible on steam, only being available on Uplay or Origin. Perhaps if Ubisoft and EA would just admit steam is better and release their games there, piracy would decrease.

NFS Payback will most likely still require Origin for its online component (online freeroam coming in 2018, woohoo!), so I guess I'm stuck with my legal copy. 

If it weren't for the online part, I'd uninstall mine and get the cracked version in a heartbeat.  Cracked EA games tend to run a hell of a lot better than official ones. 

 

Can't speak for Ubisoft games, I just don't play those.

They're fairly public on /r/crackwatch, the developers don't bother to pursue them. Most of them are kind of ethical and tell people to buy the games to support the developers

Piracy is a convenient scapegoat, but DRM has never been about piracy. DRM is all about controlling access and now days its also about trying to prevent people from getting around pay-to-win microtransaction bullshit.

Not exactly, the games publishers part funded a study with the EU looking into how piracy affects sales however the study showed that piracy has no impact on sales and in fact can increase sales.

 

The study was never released, it got buried by the EU until an MEP found out about it and used her powers to get hold of a copy. Now she's singing from the rooftops about it.

 

It's a pretty funny situation.

It doesn't run that smoothly on consoles. Even with a 30fps target it has framerate issues on consoles. Also, don't compare console specs to PCs. Consoles are static hardware, it is much easier for a company to optimize a game for static hardware than the millions of different system configurations that exist on the PC. There is more than just DRM differences between the two versions. Origins looks significantly better on the PC. As far as performance goes, I can't say that either my desktop (with a 1080) or my laptop (with a 1050) provide disappointing performance. The game actually runs surprisingly well on my laptop.

The majority of piracy happens in the first month or two after release, with much more following many years later when the game is "retro" and not really in circulation. The protection only has to last a month or two for it to completely pay for itself. That's why the studios keep using it and will continue to use it.

I wouldn't mind that so much if they stripped the protection after the initial sales period had passed.  In fact, it would probably eliminate 90% (or more) of the cracking groups out there, as there'd be no need for them.  By the time they cracked it, the protection would be removed officially.
