Jonathan Ive retakes control of Design at Apple as Head of Apple's Design Team after a 2 year hiatus

Jonathan Ive, your favorite Apple designer who designed the Sexy MacBook Air subnotebook in 2009 is back.

 

He's been on a bit of a hiatus since 2015. Many believed he was going to retire as he is 50 and probably swimming in money.

 

But no. Apple has provided a reason for why Johnathan Ive was absent as the head of Apple Design.

 

Apple told Bloomberg:

With the completion of Apple Park, Apple’s design leaders and teams are again reporting directly to Jony Ive, who remains focused purely on design

 

Many individuals across the internets have been quite concerned and confused by Apple's Design team since 2015. From the Magic Mouse 2 with an awkwardly positioned charging port to the also awkward Apple Pen Charging method to all kinds of other weird design stuff.

 

Alas, the design nonsense is no more.

 

Anyhow, hopefully this will lead to Apple designing products which actually look beautiful (again) .

I think they could have done the top a bit better. Its hard to implement a bezel-less display different from Samsung but to me it just sticks out. It's probably hard to do seeing as its the camera etc. Other than that it does look quite lovely. But man my OCD is triggerd.

My Dad has got the upgrade-itis so he's getting one soon. I'll see how it really it (I shouldn't judge before using it really!). I looked at some tech reviewers online and I guess they complained about the notch a lot. I've got a 7 so I won't uipgrade until next year or the year after anyway.

 

I think my other thought about it was the gestures working in some games like Fruit Ninja where you swipe any way across the screen.

There are a number of inaccuracies here.

 

Ive was not on a hiatus, and was never really gone; he just took a new oversight role that reduced (but did not eliminate) his direct influence on product design.  Part of that was attributed to his design work on the Apple Park campus and retail stores.

 

Also, there's no guarantee that Ive will swoop back in and address every concern you've ever had about a recent Apple product.  Much like the whole "Steve Jobs would never have..." myth, there's this misguided notion that Ive has a divine infallibility.  There may be things he does better, but he has most definitely made design mistakes and wasn't working alone before his role change.  I would mainly see him shifting priorities slightly and maybe using his increased hands-on time to tackle outstanding concerns.

 

Also, what the hell is wrong with the looks of Apple products?  The iPhone X looks great, and the 8 is the most polished version of the outgoing design.  You're not getting rid of the notch until Apple can somehow cram all that tech into a smaller space, and that's not happening anytime soon.  The Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and HomePod all look fine as well.  I'm more concerned about functionality (say, Mac keyboards and the upcoming Mac Pro) than aesthetic changes.

Did some digging, Ive was far from on hiatus. Sounds like he took more of a consultant role in the past 2 years.

The problem with the iphone 8 at least, is visually its too close to the previous gens. You could tell the first iphone and 3g apart easily. You could tell the 4 from the 3gs easily. You could tell the 5 from the 4s easily. You could tell the 6 from the 5s easily. It may seem stupid, but to a lot of people it means that "its the same phone".

 

That said, the feel of the new iphones are on point. I went from a 6s to an 8. The 8 makes my old 6s feel like a toy.
