Apple Receives Patent For A 'Foldable' iPhone Design

Apple, one of the world's most valuable companies, has received a patent for a Foldable phone (no, not a flip-phone)

However, they are not the first company to do so, in fact there have been many attempts at such an idea though most of them stay concepts 

One example would be the so-called "Samsung Galaxy X" which of course comes from Apple's explosive rival

Well, it looks like Apple is trying to jump at the concept with Patent #9,485,862

Apple notes in their granted patent that one of the materials that could be used in this foldable/bendable iPhone form factor is ceramic. The first time that Apple considered this material for a future iPhone was discovered and published in our September 2016 patent report titled "Revealing Apple Patent Covers Ceramic Apple Watch and All-New Ceramic iPhone."

 

It seems that one of the materials that has been brought up has been ceramic 

A notable phone that uses ceramic is the Xiaomi Mi 5 though its use is primarily for aesthetic and "feel"

Apple notes in today's granted patent that "Electronic devices may be provided with carbon nanotube structures or other structures based on carbon (e.g., graphene structures, carbon-fiber structures having carbon fibers other than carbon nanotubes, etc.). Configurations in which the carbon-based structures are carbon nanotube structures are sometimes described herein as an example.

 

Conductive carbon nanotube paths can form signal paths that are flexible and resistant to cracking.

 

The carbon nanotube structures may be incorporated into signal cables such as flexible printed circuit cables, rigid printed circuit boards, printed circuits that include rigid portions with flexible tails (sometimes referred to as "rigid flex"), portions of display structures, portions of touch sensors such as capacitive touch sensor arrays for displays or track pads, camera structures, antenna structures, housing structures, internal device structures, electrical components, substrates, brackets, housing walls, other structures, or combinations of these structures.

 

It seems interesting to see nanotubes added to the equation given that commercial application isn't in the picture yet given it's early conception 

But it is nice to see that companies are seeing a future in the material though I'm not certain as to how soon we might actually see its widespread use

 

But like any other patent we must review whether or not the company is actually willing to pour resources into the project

Remember that most companies patent just for the sake of it (Yes, I know the company we're currently talking about does it) 

 

I honestly want something to change the current market of smartphones 

I find most of the designs to be boring and we've been stuck with bricks that seem to get thinner and lose "unnecessary features" (RIP Headphone jack) 

I want more modular phones, bendable, foldable, or maybe even...Holographic (Am I being optimistic? Nah...yeah)

And I know that it won't change for quite a while, so I guess I'll stick with a brick that plays cat videos for a couple more years

Ceramic is used for scratch resistance, not just "aesthetic and feel".

Ummmm I don't know. Maybe a phone that goes in your wallet? A foldable phone makes sense for a bigger screen but doesn't seem practicable. I don't know maybe the iPhone 9 will have it

If anyone's see Westworld, I really think that phones are going to go in the direction of the tablets they have, where they fold out. Pretty cool idea, if they can figure out a way to make it fold almost completely flat. I imagine the first few iterations will look sort of like the Surface Book, not quite closing entirely.

 

I hope Apple's patent doesn't somehow ruin it for others.

Dell was having a $600 off sale for the fully specced out model, so I decided to get it :P

Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.
