Youtube Heroes- Youtube to give points, perks for flagging videos, subtitles, ect

Syntaxvgm

Yep, you heard it here folks. Youtube isn't just committing seppuku, they are making sure the blade is nice and sharp first.

Here's a list of perks

ei31Lnv.png

Ultimately, the problem in my opinion is the fact that treating flagging videos as 'heroic' and giving points for it turns mass flagging from

Quote

wow, this video shouldn't be on youtube

to

Quote

I bet technically I can get points from this

Which, I would like to point out, cursing is enough to get demonetized

And if you take a look at reddit, people will do a lot for worthless internet points

Edit

I did my best to simulate what subtitles will look like

Just wtf.  I hope in addition to the "heros" system there is a separate system for the villans of YouTube.  I.e., repeated false flagging will get your account restricted where you can't report people anymore temporarily with the punishment increasing for each time you get on that list.

usually in those cases they close it down to where you need to have an account to make changes. On paper it works and in practice it works on pages with less traffic.

But youre right anything with high traffic like politics doesnt result to well. Which lends into why I dont think itll work well on YT either.

i think the heroes system is a bad idea, since people will abuse the system and flag random videos just to get the perks from doing so.

This would work in a perfect world. We are not in a perfect world. This will be abused. Ofc there will be some genuine ppl that make it their life to collect points and flag videos correctly...though with YouTube's vague, broad stroke rules, "correctly" is quite subjective...so that just adds to the "this system probably wont work well" problem. Not to mention those that will just flag anything for points. "Oh you said f*ck?" *flag* :P

I had both breakthrough and spearhead. Those anti-gravity multiplayer servers consumed so much of my time after school, good times.

As for the trust value, it might be more complicated than that. We live in a world now where everyone is offended by everything, and a lot of it is entirely subjective. Before any of this goes into effect, there needs to be very clear rules on what people can report as offensive. Even then, what offends me might not offend you. Giving random people the power to police anything ends in disaster most of the time. With the vast majority of videos that exist, I highly doubt each claim will be manually reviewed, which leads to the potential of even more abuse than what we already see with the DMCA reports.

Once we have a baseline set of rules preventing people from reporting things they disagree with, then we can work on a trust system to avoid repeat abuse. I honestly believe a strict system needs to be in place. Abuse this, lose your account and every video on it. Make it very clear from the start that this is not something to be toyed with, and that real consequences exist. Repeat abuse will result in total termination of the gmail account attached to it. That will impact android users as well. Though, I highly doubt they will take such an aggressive stance on this, as they let people abuse DMCA with very little consequences, which is far more important.

Hopefully a balance is found somewhere with this, or else it's going to get really bad, really quick.

With the mess of different regional, political, and sociopolitical cultures out there that we currently have, even setting a baseline will be borderline impossible without relying on already established international rules for society. Even then, they risk inadvertently giving the finger to the anomalies and caveats of each rule, which results in everybody suffering from the repercussions.

Sadly, there is simply no solution for situations like this. The world is becoming too small too quickly, and nobody is willing or able to adjust accordingly.

Read the community standards; it's like a guide on how to not be a moron.

I can't see how this will backfire at all. Clearly, Google has a fool-proof plan here. Nothing they ever do backfires in any way, so why would this?
