The Apple- Oh Sorry, OPPO Watch - Oppo's Upcoming Smartwatch Looks Like an Apple Watch

Oppo are announcing an upcoming smartwatch, dubbed the 'Oppo Watch', and it looks exactly like an Apple Watch, with details to be announced on the 6th of March, 10:30am CET.

 

 

The design based off the tweet, undeniably inspired by Apple's own smartwatch... The curved glass, boxy casing, button placement, and even the wriststrap setup.

It looks like you can use the watch to make and receive calls. And if you look at the watch on the right, it looks like there’s an option to send a message to the caller if you aren’t able to take their call.

 

The watches themselves also look slightly different than the Apple Watch. While the body of the Oppo Watch appears to be pretty similar in shape to the Apple Watch, there’s no knob that could function like the Apple Watch’s Digital Crown — instead, the Oppo Watch has a second and larger button similar to other WearOS devices. The watch on the left also comes in a nice blue color, which isn’t an option for the Apple Watch. And the bands look a little different than those you can get for Apple’s wearable.

 

Additionally covered in The Verge's article, a couple pictures of the Oppo Watch were shared (or in the latter picture, allegedly leaked) on popular Chinese social networking site Weibo.

 

The button placement is undoubtedly inspired by Apple, and even the dip in  between the buttons are reminiscent of that of the iPhone's side rails, right? Nonetheles, the Watch looks beautiful, and while there have been no major specs detailed as of yet, this is one of the most beautiful-looking Android smartwatches to ever be announced, even if it earned that because of its likelihood to the Apple Watch.

I never got the appeal of smartwatches...? My phone can do everything portable just fine and fits snugly in my pocket? The most that I need a watch for is for it to tell the time? Would smartwatches even work without both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity anyway?

It helps me, my job requires me to use my hands all the time, and not having to pull out my phone to check a message is very nice

I think it’s the way the bands are paired with the casing that gives it a similar overall appearance to the Apple Watch.
However, I think the casing/display are different enough and make some notable changes.

The value is harder to appreciate if you haven't lived with one, but it's there.

 

First, there's fitness.  It's so, so much easier to track your activity with a smartwatch, especially if your routines can't easily be tracked by a phone on your arm.  For that matter, it's just more comfortable to leave your phone in the gym locker.  And you can listen to music, too, if you have Bluetooth headphones.

 

There's also lots of conveniences that add up.  For example, I get dozens of work emails every day; my watch saves me from having to reach for my phone when I'm not at my desk (or even when I am).  I've answered phone calls when I couldn't grab my phone in time. I can find out when the train arrives or check the weather just by flicking my wrist; I can turn on the lights at home when I'm standing outside my door.  You get the idea.

 

And yes, you can get some smartwatches with cellular data.  You still need to pair with a phone more often than not, but you can leave your phone behind and still get calls and texts, run apps or play music.  It's overkill for most people, but it's handy if you don't always want to be near your phone.

Neither have I. I've even said they are stupid. And now I have one lol (Apple Watch 5). Granted, I could live without it, but there are tiny things of convenience. Like, silencing the phone deep in my pocket just by placing palm over the watch face. Or answering a call on a watch even though my phone is actually on another floor in the house or inside the house and I'm outside as both phone and watch cleverly connect directly to each other via BT if close enough or through WiFi both are connected to if wider apart. I also bought one for "body telemetry" features like heart rate and alerts connected with it (although half of them aren't working in my country for god knows what reason it wasn't certified/allowed) and fall detection is also neat than for "smart watch". And it'll come in handy when I'll be riding bicycle where I have my phone stuck in a seat bag behind me and I often couldn't hear the phone or it took long to answer. Not that it's necessary to do so as I don't have that important calls, but it's a convenience still. It's really all about mini convenience that necessity. I'm also a watch nerd, owning bunch of watches of all sorts, from analog mechanical and quartz with various charging methods to special mechanical digital ones and E-Ink ones. It was just a matter of time when i got a "smart" watch.

 

My main reason I called them stupid and didn't like them was because they were all really slow with outdated chipsets and they all turned off the display after few seconds. It just looked stupid and defeated the purpose of watch where you could just glance at it and see time and any point. When Apple Watch 5 came out with always-on display I said, this is it. I've already had iPhone at the time it was released so I said, why the hell not. And I really like it.

An extra thought: it's funny that people will swear up and down that the industry doesn't copy Apple aside from the tiny brands that always produce knockoffs, but then you see this... Oppo is basically producing an Apple Watch clone that it tweaked just enough to (maybe, possibly) avoid a lawsuit.  Apple isn't a pure font of originality, but at least it hasn't outright ripped off designs like Oppo, Samsung and others have.

They are just in denial if they don't think they do. I mean look at Hauwei. A Space Grey Matebook X Pro with an identical keyboard layout and same font with an oversized glass trackpad? Yeah everyone copies Apple lol

Huawei is odd -- its phones are frequently quite original and push the boundaries, but its computers?  While it doesn't follow Apple to a tee, there's no doubt where it gets the ideas from.

To be really honest, they all look the same, because they're all manufactured in a rather homogeneity. The way the professionals in China engineer ai for all these products (ALL OF THESE: China is THE place where smart watches get made), makes them function 1:1 with each other - maybe because smartwatch tech hasn't advanced so much, as to warrant a distinction within its peers.
