At a data rate of 5,500 megabits per second (Mb/s), the 12Gb LPDDR5 is approximately 1.3 times faster than previous mobile memory (LPDDR4X, 4266Mb/s) that is found in today’s high-end smartphones. When made into a 12GB package, the LPDDR5 is able to transfer 44GB of data, or about 12 full-HD (3.7GB-sized) movies, in only a second. The new chip also uses up to 30 percent less power than its predecessor by integrating a new circuit design with enhanced clocking, training and low-power feature that ensures stable performance even when operating at a blazingly fast speed.

 

In order to manage production capacity with more flexibility, Samsung is considering transferring its 12Gb LPDDR5 production to its Pyeongtaek (Korea) campus starting next year, depending on demand from global customers. Following its introduction of the 12Gb LPDDR5 mobile DRAM, Samsung expects to also develop a 16Gb LPDDR5 next year, to solidify its competitive edge in the global memory market.

Apparently Samsung phones might get LPDDR5. 

 

It's kind of nice to see DDR5 actually happen after years of waiting. Although it's also sad that my computer ram is now 2 whole generations behind a bloody smartphone lol.

 

I really can't wait to actually have DDR5 PC RAM, but it probably won't happen for a year or so.

unlikely, as its still lower power consumption and most laptops do not need the extra performance offered by ddr4/ddr5

This will be a very good improvement for new 5G flagships. I'll probably get a new phone once this and Android 10 phones get released.

yes but not in most. Most laptops run ddr3 because it consumes less power.

DDR4 requires 1.2V while DDR3L requires 1.35V. DDR4 is more power efficient than DDR3.

Shouldn’t this be 1.3 times as fast, or simply 30% faster? 1.3 times faster would be 9,811Mb/s.

New laptops pretty much exclusively use DDR4, which draws less power than DDR3.

LPDDR5 has the same amount of bandwidth as DDR4.

4266Mb/s times 1.3 is 5545.8Mb/s. Meaning it is 1.3 times faster than the 4266Mb/s. 30% faster is the .3 in the multiplication. They had an increase of speed of 1.3 times, or 30%. It's the same just a different way to show for it.

 

For example if I have $5,000 in a Certificate of Deposit and I ended up with $7500. I had an increase of 1.5 times or 50%.

To add to this, @sazrocks, you're thinking of a 130% increase, which would be 2.3 times as fast.

I assume they're talking about legal sources like Apple Store, Prime Video or Netflix offline features for watching later. 

Not your torrented 40GB Remux of the bluray BDMV to MKV.

 

Those offered by the streaming services are typically around 4-7GB h.265 encoded (hevc) which offer much more density for storage, and stream well over HTML5 for the huge number of their customers who don't have 100Mbit+ or unlimited bandwidth.

Why in the world does 5G need LPDDR5 RAM? 4.2 Gb/s of LPDDR4X is more than enough for the idealistic 1 Gb/s 5G speeds (or am I missing something?)

 

Cool speed and efficiency improvements and all but does everyone really have to integrate the 5G and AI buzzword into everything?

Next year phones are set to surpass my PC RAM wise. There's only one solution. Increase my PC to 32GB of RAM.

Seriously though, this is great news. While it might not be totally useful for everyone, it's always nice to have the option for those that can use it.

The Note is looking to be more and more tempting...
