Summary:
The Verge has released on article on the working conditions of the sourced Facebook Moderation employees. Stress levels are constantly high, anxiety disorders constantly develop and create PTSD, and the barely provided therapy is completely cut off if an employee under-performs... at right around $14/hr max.

My thoughts:
Sorry guys, no witty title for this one. Mental health is a serious topic. As someone who has been on the internet for a while, I've been all over the place. From Reddit, to IRC and BBS, to 4chan and more. Even minor, infrequent viewing of content these people go through every day can easily change your mindset and cause stress, I can't personally imagine going through this content 8 hours a day, 5 days a week or more. Even therapists can be frequently found going to therapy themselves, to not offer better care for these people is inhumane.

I definitely didn't expect Facebook to bother with human moderation, or even within the United States for that matter, since cheap overseas PC labor is easy today come by. 

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

muh specs 

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it. 

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff. 

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

People have been complaining about how horrible it is to work for these large companies for many years now. It was the thing that everyone wanted to work for Google because they had cool colored slides and provided food and places to sleep. Yet it's a giant ploy to make you stay at work and work longer

VRT, the national TV network here in Belgium, did a 3-part documentary about Facebook.  They did touch on the moderation subject, and there were ex-moderators that (anonymously due to NDA) told the reporters very similar stories. 

 

I'd link the whole thing, but it's almost completely in Dutch without English subtitles.

1) Is it just me that think these people sound really weak and fragile? I am not sure what type of content they have to shift through all day, but when someone says they develop PTSD and need therapy from reading "dehumanizing speech" all I can think is "wow, a special snowflake had to read someone say someone else was a nigger faggot and now they need therapy".

 

2) The entire thing sounds like they had some crazy party at work and got caught. "Yeah, we totally had sex and smoked weed at the office because we are overworked. We are the victims!". I'm sorry, but I can't in good conscious read this without pointing out that Facebook is not responsible for the private decisions of it's employees after they are no longer at work.

If their employees choose to turn to drugs and sex for release instead of to other, possibly better methods, that is their employees decision, not Facebooks. Your employer is not responsible for making sure that you're not a nymphomaniac drug addict.

 

Your employer is responsible for abiding by the agreement made in your employment contract, and abiding by all applicable employment laws. And that is all that they are responsible for.

Also, the Verge makes the claim that viewing conspiracy theories is giving the moderators PTSD... Well, quite frankly, if you can't read "Bush did 9/11" without having a mental breakdown, maybe being a an internet content moderator isn't a good fit for you.

I didn't want to mention it really but I'd love to get that money for moderating facebook. $14 USD/hr is not bad - It's not exactly skilled labour (Is that the min wage?). Just like any job, you can choose to quit. Mental health is quite serious but if they are putting themselves in that position IDK I have a hard time having sympathy. 

 

Going to say as well, for that pay, you can afford to get help from a counsellor or psychotherapist, or you can blow it on drugs. Life choices aren't the responsibility of the employer - but workplace conduct is.

Though, theres people where there isnt really a job out there for them and needs to get themselves a job quick. They wouldn't care about whats happening, they just take it. They need the money

They are pretty believable, but probably no less than what investigative journalists would see, or a soldier, police detective. They can certainly lead a traumatic work life, but then continuing to go is another matter (as is the sex and drugs), that's really where the nail hits the door for me. If it is real, instating a counsellor for the workplace might not be a bad idea.
