GTX 970 apparently can't use 4 gigs of VRAM?

Nvidia's response.

"We are still looking into this and will have an update as soon as possible."

It appears as if bandwidth goes to hell at around 3.5 gigs of VRAM. Probably would only be a problem on SLI 4k machines on some games. People seem pretty upset on Neogaf. Put one of these in my sister's computer, but to be honest probably won't be an issue as it is a mini itx without an SLI motherboard.

Yeah doubt most people will be hitting 4 gigs of VRAM on a single card. Shadows of Mordor was up there, bout the only game I can think of where I saw 4 gigs used on my R9 290. For SLI setups I can see it being a problem though. I might be bummed if I had two of them.

I take it you are running SLI? So does performance just tank at higher vram usage? Hope it isn't a hardware problem. In the neogaf thread some people were saying Samsung ram cards were better than the Hynix? Lot of people ran the test there and posted results. I know my sister is really happy with hers. No idea what ram is in it, it is the mini itx Gigabyte model.

Interesting,  Sounds like Nvidia might have made a serious mistake,  I read there was speculation it was a result of disabled SMM units causing an overload on the memory controller.

They'd better get their shit together quick smart or the rumor mill will tear them a new one before we even find out what the real cause is.

Great, and I just bought a 970 yesterday. I'd love an actual statement from Nvidia

I had this problem with my GTX 660 advertising as 2GB but never went past 1.5GB. Pretty shitty it's now a problem with the 970s. This is a clear case of false advertising. They will have to fix this.

I really hope with is a driver issue, not hardware.

I wonder if this is a fault in memory itself, or a bug in how SLI works... either way, this is not good!

I just found out about this on various sites. I have been running into issues with my single 970 in Shadow of Mordor lately in the 2nd area where the framerate will drop to the 40s or will freeze for a few seconds. Very disappointing! If I would have know that it only used 3-3.5 of the 4 GB of vram I would have just bought the 980 up front. I might try to get in on EVGA's step up program but then I'd be without a graphics card for a couple of weeks...

There's been some talk that it's actually because of the cut off SMM units that actually limit the memory bus.

Do you have any grasp on the actual issue here or are you just trying to rile up people?

Find me someone from the tech industry that has come to the conclusion or else it's a bunch of fear mongering by forum users. The topic has been pretty much debunked in overclock.net in the very same threads it was started.
