Apple can actually make an incredible gpu

According to Anandtech, the gpu inside the A8x of the iPad Air 2 is even better than they first thought. They were able to make a gpu that rivaled low end discrete gpu, so the mobile space is still no where close to consoles yet.

 

With 256 FP32 ALUs Apple has come very close to implementing a low-end desktop class GPU on a tablet SoC, and perhaps just as impressively can sustain that level of performance for hours.

And they're even working on a Battlefield 4 port from what I know.

I hope Apple doesn't take this as a reason to start making their own CPUs and even GPUs. 

 

Going from PPC to x86 was a good thing for everyone. It made things a hell of a lot easier to deal with. Please don't go back to truly making your own walled garden of hardware. 

 

Or do it. You'll still probably sell roughly a shit ton of products every minute.

I would encourage them to pursue x86 though. They have the capability, imo, to compete with Intel and actually push Intel to improve even more.

Ever since the iPhone 5 (A6), the chip is fully designed by Apple so that they could emphasize IPC and GPU performance, while keeping clocks and power consumption really low.

Macs come with gaming grade GPU's ? I thought they only came with quadros or firepros.

nVidia is a gpu company, they are known to create incredible gpu, but to see that Apple is able to match the peak performance of Tegra k1, and outsustain the performance of K1 over time (tegra k1 throttles over time, A8/A8x doesn't) show just how advanced Apple really is.

They design it, samsung only manufactures it based on their requirements.
