Intel built a processor for wearable computing, and now it has a tiny computer where that processor can live. At CES 2014, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich announced Edison, "a full Pentium-class PC" that's the size and shape of an SD card you might otherwise put in your camera. It's powered by a dual-core Quark SOC, runs Linux, and has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, according to the company. Intel even has a specific app store designed for Edison, and a special version of Wolfram that will come to the computer.

 

Never, EVER would I have thought that ANYBODY would be able to develop something as powerful as this, well, computer, in that form factor. It's a fully functional PC, and even comes with built in WiFi and Bluetooth support, and it's just the size of an SD card. Wow, that's amazing. This thing has to be expensive though.

It has wireless. You can use wireless keyboard and mice.

If they managed to incorporate WiDi, then you can connect it to tv's or a WiDi compatible monitor.

 

Who really needs cables anymore?

That said such a device would probably be used in wearable tech. I believe that was their whole Quark processor aim.

That's not the total purpose, yet of course Wi-Di (Wireless Display) exists as a technology. Realistically, it's built into things. For example:

 

Next, Krzanich shows off a computer composed of the company's Quark processor family that fits inside of an SD memory card. Called “Edison,” Intel is going to make the device available to developers in the middle of this year.

What can you do with Edison? Krzanich shows off a child's play toy with Edison built into it. A “smart turtle.” Like a stealth baby monitor.

It measures breathing rates of the child in their crib, and it sends the data about the child's stats to a coffee mug that the parent is drinking from. The mug lights up in a rhythmic pattern to indicate the status of the baby.

To help spur development of Edison devices, especially wearables, Krzanich announces a contest that will award a total of $1.3 million to multiple winners. The competition, “make it wearable,” will also connect the top ten winners to domain-area experts to help them.

It is a computer, so I would assume you meant like peripherals?

In which case.. Wireless, or some sort of docking station I would assume.

You don't connect it to a computer. It IS a computer. It's a SOC (System on Chip). Everything that is needed for a computer is on that chip - CPU, GPU, RAM, etc. etc. All that's left is for Intel to throw it into a super tiny case smaller than a smartphone, wire up an HDMI port and a USB port or 2, and a power plug, then the Edison is good to go.
