Mini News : Crucial launches BX500 SSD

orbitalbuzzsaw

Source : TomsInsanity https://www.tomshardware.co.uk/crucial-bx500-ssd,news-59092.html

Spoiler

Crucial's family of SSDs is about to get bigger with the addition of the new BX500 SSD, whose objective is to compete in the entry-level SSD market. Available in capacities of 120GB, 240GB and 480GB, the Crucial BX500 focuses on performance without sacrificing value

Crucial has launched the BX500 budget SSD series. They claim it's rated up to 540 / 500 MB/s sequential but they haven't released any 4K random numbers yet, or indeed any other specs on the SSD other than that it's using Micron 3D NAND, but TomsInsanity theorizes that it's using 64-layer QLC chips.

IMO it seems like a good budget SSD, we'll have to see how it is compared to the Team L5 Lite 3D, SanDisk SSD Plus, etc. etc.

The MX500's are already cheap tbf so I wonder how they can possibly be more "budget" unless its like a few dollars less? in which case it seems kinda pointless.

Seems to be about $10 less than an MX500, about comparable price wise to Sandisk SSD+ or my favorite TeamGroup L5 Lite 3D

If you're interested in picking up the new SSD, it's currently available for purchase on Crucial's website. The 120GB model goes for $29.99, and the 240GB and 480GB models are $49.99 and $89.99, respectively. Crucial will start shipping out orders on August 31.

But they are still more expensive than PNY and even SanDisk offerings. I wouldn't but SanDisk, but have two budget PNY CS1311, and they are great. Looking on Amazon, that PNY model is still cheaper than the MX500, and is competitive with the suggested BX500 pricing.

And from my time in retail, SanDisk and PNY SSDs fly off the shelf at a much higher rate than any other brand.

They're still plenty of room for crucial to get in there with better prices.

QLC? I didn't even think about it. Now that you mention it that would explain why they never explicitly say what kind of flash it is. That being said, the endurance numbers are pretty close to the MX500, at least for the 250gb variant, and compared to the 660p, which should be higher end, the bx500 actually has better endurance numbers. Plus I'd imagine QLC would destroy performance of a 120gb variant making it not that worth it, so I'm more inclined to believe it's still TLC. Definitely quite odd though.

Maybe a little bias going on here? I would pick SanDisk over PNY. I know plenty of people with SanDisk hardware, and no one with PNY.

IDK, never used a PNY SSD but have many friends with Sandisk drives; none are as good as the TeamGroup L5 Lite 3D

In my time at retail and tech support, the SanDisk drives failed quite a bit more. And with the amount of SanDisk SD card that have gone corrupted on me, I should away from them when it comes to trusting my data integrity. Not a PNY fanboy by any means, I mean Patriot and Kingston also have options. But i generally stick to things I trust to not fail.

I wouldn't say biased, just don't like them based on my experience with their product.

To SanDisk's credit, most of their drives failed within a month or two. So maybe you're fine if you make it past that. Or since it's retail, they may have had a bad batch.

Sandisk as a brand is fine, but the Sandisk SSD Plus is bad. The Sandisk Ultra 3D is great (860 Evo-like).

I'm still hesitant with that from what I've experienced with mine.

It's an SSD, it's reliable. It does what it's supposed to. It's fast enough for what I need. Now I mean I wanna get a 970 EVO 500GB but still

I suppose it's alright as long as you know what you're getting and it's cheap. Reliability should be fine.

Unless you are copying files, SATA and NVME offer the same performance side by side.
