Huawei Passes Apple in Smartphone Share for the First Time

Chinese company Huawei has passed Apple in smartphone share for the first time, making it the world's second biggest maker of smartphones globally.

Huawei shipped 54.2 million phones in the quarter, 41 percent more than a year earlier, to jump ahead of the iPhone maker for the first time, according to market research firm IDC. The telecoms giant accounted for 16 percent of the market, compared with 21 percent for South Korea’s Samsung and 12 percent for Apple. Xiaomi Corp. and Oppo, both based in China, rounded out the top five.

 

Chinese smartphone makers have been gaining influence as their domestic market grows and they expand abroad. Huawei has pushed into Europe and Africa, though it’s failed to crack the massive U.S. market. Apple tends to sell iPhones

at higher prices than its rivals and profits from services like iTunes, which helped it top earnings estimates for the quarter.

 

“The importance of Huawei overtaking Apple this quarter cannot be overstated,” said Ben Stanton, a senior analyst at Canalys, which also reported the shift in quarterly market share. “It is the first time in seven years that Samsung and Apple have not held the top two positions. Huawei’s exclusion from the U.S. has forced it to work harder in Asia and Europe to achieve its goals.”

Fairly impressive that they was able to beat out such a giant like Apple and reclaim it's number 2 spot, now it just needs to aim to beat out Samsung (GL) at the number one spot on the leaderboards.

I would argue that the significance of them overtaking Apple in Marketshare is being greatly overstated. 

 

So they have more units sold, and what do they have to show for it?

Sure, that is certainly a possibility. But we can give Huawei credit for those things once Apple stops making essentially all the money in the industry and Huawei breaks out of China and gets significant shares in other countries.

Inroads are a lot different than convincing regualar people outside of China to buy something other than Samsung or Apple. 

 

It will be some time before the average person will stand in line for the next Huawei flagship.

Of course, it takes time to build a brand and create a user base that loves your products. 

 

I’m not saying that Huawei can’t do that, but simply shipping a lot of phones is a far cry from accomplishing what a company like Apple has done.

I was thinking more along the lines of essentially eventing a few categories and setting industry wide trends and innovations that have made smartphones are great as they are today. Regardless of how you feel about them.

I'd argue that Android is what made smartphones great since it made them cheap. Before Android became widespread smartphones were a novelty for the upper middle class and the rich even in the developed world but Android made smartphones available to the developing world (where most of the world's population lives, much as Americans might like to ignore it)

My point isn't that huawei has the most brand loyalty. My point is that people in countries like Peru, Argentina and Chile are looking at more budget oriented devices that do not skim so much on features or warranty and Huawei is doing it quite well there. Tho xiomi its doing its thing, but warranty is still an issue.

And that is the problem. If Huawei can only appeal to small markets with very little profit to be had in them, then they might ship a lot of units, but they won't be making a lot of money while doing it.

I'm making a joke because it's alleged the Chinese government use ZTE and Huawei phones to spy on the user. 

They are really great phones though, just have to handle them carefully like any other phone and they will last a while. Hard to find places to repair them though.
