Fallout 76 won't have crossplay on PS4 because of guess who

ItsMitch

S: Verge

Sony being mega dicks again after Todd Howard went public about the recent dealings with Sony and said "Sony is not as helpful as everyone would like it" and now this is putting Fallout 76 crossplay into massive question. Sony is already suffering massive backlash from gamers as it stripped Fortnite BR's crossplay with all platforms.

Quote

Earlier this month at E3, Bethesda unveiled a new Fallout game: Fallout 76, an online, multiplayer survival game. The game will be available on the Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PCs when it’s launched this November, but according to the game’s director, it won’t allow for cross-play, because of Sony.

Todd Howard told GameStar.de (via CNet) that “we would love to do [cross-play]” in Fallout 76, “but right now that’s not possible.” The reason, he says, is Sony, which is “not as helpful as everyone would like it.”

I get that Sony is wanting a lot of money from all of this, but this is just being silly beyond all reasonable levels, Sony needs to cut this shit and just work with gamers and it's partners to work out a proper solution, not the "we have lots of gamers" excuse.

This is the 4th time they've refused X-Play (Minecraft, Rocket League & Fortnite), they've already said it's not happening and we've had an ex CEO say it won't happen cause their corporate policy is basically greed.

If anyone is surprised by this then they must be living on another world tbh.

Also FTR Sony don't need to do anything, they're a business and can do as they choose. Players need to start voting with their wallets but when you have a (guesstimated) 2:1 market share over your main competition you don't really need to worry about about a few players jumping ship. Sony know that no matter what they do 80 million people own a PS4 and a large majority can't, or don't want to, jump ship anytime soon. It's the old Apple strategy of building a walled garden, getting everyone invested then sitting back knowing people won't leave because they're invested.

Doesn't this mean Sony will be missing out on profits for this game as less people are going to buy it on their platform?

How? If you own only a PS4 and can't really afford to buy an Xbone or PC then you have 2 choices, buy it on PS4 or don't buy it at all.

As of May 2018 it's estimated (remember MS don't release sales figures anymore) that there's 78 million PS4s Vs 35 milion Xbones.

Sony couldn't lose this generation if they tried, and believe me they know it too.

Not having cross platform support for what is probably going to be one of the biggest games of the year just because "their sales can take it" isn't a good corporate attitude. They should be striving to make the best experience for their users, not working with game studios is not how you do that.

Oh I completely agree 100%, Sony are being huge dicks right now but unfortunately for us (consumers) they won't really notice any backlash until the next generation rolls around because many many players are very heavily invested in the PS4.

Being one of the "peasants" I still believe what Sony are doing is stupid on so many levels. I think you're referring to the vocal minority here who argue between consoles for hours on end, but you have to understand even the PC community itself argues and defends brands. Both are still in the wrong however. Back to the actual discussion though, Sony are being greedy... it might me time that people go against this with their wallets, but I doubt that'll happen anytime soon.

I'm sick of Sony being able to do whatever they please, they're as anti-consumer as it gets. I lost all faith as soon as they raised the anual PS+ price from £49.99 to £59.99, it was and still is ridiculous to have to pay half a hundred just to play online.

If Sony maintains a hard line for long enough, this can certainly come back to bite them. for the short-intermediate term however, preventing cross-play is unlikely to deal any sort of significant damage to Sony or Playstation. The marketshare is simply too great a hurdle (for this gen), allowing Sony a great deal of discretion in how they treat developers, and to some extent, the consumer.

Unless Sony changes this policy for the PS5 however, the other manufacturers (Nintendo, Microsoft) could utilize the opportunity to take market share from Sony. Though most likely, I see Sony allowing cross play in the future in exchange for some harsh terms (exclusivity for some games, or perhaps large payments/portion of profits for the privilege), or some other means for Sony to maintain some control over developers.

Yeah it will, especially if Sony locks you out of playing on your account because you had the gall to play on another cross platform supported system

I was really hoping this game would be cross play.  The wife and I have a couple online buddies we play with and they all play xbox.  We currently have 1 xbox one and I was hoping I wouldn't have to buy another for us all to play (like how we play Gears of War 4).

It's just really anti-consumer imo. All the tech on PC/XBone/PS4 is so similar that's there's no real obstacle to allowing devs to improve the playing field for everyone. Sony is using their marketshare for profit- which is fine but when you have brand loyalty as strong as on the consoles you don't want to make yourself look bad

That's an F in the profile pic

Honestly the game is said to be always online with no option to opt out. If PvP is an option I probably wouldn't want console players and pc players on the same servers just because the console players would get dumpstered.

I don't think that's entirely accurate, it's always online yes but hasn't Todd Howard said it will have a pseudo single player mode where you can solo and still play story?

Don't get me wrong though, I realise that's not relevant to this discussion anyway.

You know I legit thought about getting a PS4 pro for a little while. I'm not in the market and my 1070 it's still solid for a good long while but when the GPU market was out of control I thought "Well my 950 as a back  up is serviceable but the PS4 might be an interesting thing to own and check out some exclusives"

But thankfully prices are more sane now (i.e. getting an emergency 1060 3gb would only be a little bit of a rip off and not a gigantic rip off like it was a little while ago) and Sony it's still fucking insane still pulling shit like this.

I genuinely don't want to end up in a fucking walled garden, any more than the one I already am by having a single, massive Steam collection.
