I hope completely ruining two water block, a pump, a reservoir, a tubing kit, and the experiment was worth putting a radiator in the thumbnail.

Hello it is my first post on the forums. I have been long time fan of LTT on YT, however sorry to admit this but, this attempt seemed pretty half-assed Linus! Yes it might be not plug n'play stuff, there might be some difficulties along the way, but you shouldn't give up on this!
My forum friend from Poland created similar ghetto solution few years ago, and got it working pretty well 40c at GPU under load not to mention that the loudest thing in the setup was PSU fan!

He used 230v pump (powered from normal wall power outlet): https://www.ceneo.pl/12440997
This is aluminum modular radiator similar to what he used https://kociolcenowy.pl/grzejniki-diamond-wulkan/643-grzejnik-aluminiowy-wulkan-350.html
To keep it from rusting out he used https://www.boryszewerg.com.pl/ergolid-a,114,l1.html which is product specifically designed for industrial cooling and has lots of corrosion inhibitors. (Previously he used fluid for car radiators mixed with demineralized water in 1:5 ratio)
It cost him under 200USD excluding GPU/CPU blocks and pipping.
Also due to thermodynamics if you put your radiator higher than heat source it will heat more easily as seen in your case.
And due to fact you want to use much more modern hardware, i would recommend using bigger radiator with more sections than what he used.

That's like saying "oh this person works retail what do they know" as a means of discrediting their intelligence when they're only working retail to pay rent while studying for a degree xD 

Lol true it was more of a light hearted jab. Just trying to say to have a PhD in everything Linus does would be impossible so he might not always be right. But he is quick to fix it and has done a great job keeping up with new stuff

Interesting but funny concept. But what if you had just used a car radiator and attach a box fan to it? I think its would keep it cool and hot at the same time. Might be an idea for another video (unless you have already done this, and i havent seen the video yet)

Wouldn't using a regular pc radiator (e.g. h100 or wtv) heat the room exactly the same? since it's dumping that same heat in the room anyways?

Don't post much but watch all the LTT and TQ stuff.

 

I am amazed reading this thread (and I am sure many others like it) how irritated people are getting because this video shows something that is in their view, not doable, a waste of parts, click bait, views hunting etc

 

What this actually is is an entertaining and informative video that shows what you could do, not should do. Its an interesting experiment with a lighthearted edge.

 

And as for click bait, just hunting to get view count up - of course it is, but in the most positive of ways. To criticise this is to criticise all sellers of goods, they obviously want to stand out and get attention to make sales, or in this case get views.  

Do you get drawn to the grey fronted, text heavy, picture-less reference book at the library or the cool, colourful, accessible and entertaining comic based version that discusses the same topic? Its the same thing here.

If, after watching and enjoying this, it is something that you wanted to do then of course a a great deal more research into the science and feasibility of it must be done.

 

Just watch the videos and enjoy! Simple!

Not once in the video do they claim that using a hot water radiator will change how much heat is produced.  They clearly just did it because it'd be fun and cool.  Just sticking a PC in a psudo closet and measuring the temps would be frankly, pretty boring.  A LOT faster to produce that video but a lot less interesting to watch.  It's not like anything needed to be tested and confirmed here, most all energy that goes into any appliance ultimately is converted to heat that enters the home.  Your TV does it, your computer does it, your microwave does it, there's no surprise here.  The surprise is in 'Can we hook up a home hot water radiator to a liquid cooling loop!?' and the answer to that is 'Not unless you do an exceptionally thorough job at cleaning all debris, rust, and oxidised material from inside it.'

I think it would make more sense to put the radiator in another room.
In this kind of setup it will be some sort of thermal loop. The radiator heats up the room which in turn heats up the electronic components, the components then need more cooling and the radiator dissipates more heat to the room. The thermal loop.

 

But if the radiator is in another room this could be a relly nice thing! And also the thermal mass of the radiator would keep the other room at a pretty stable temperature even if the computer works really hard or when it's idling.

Well, this is basically what me and my colleagues have been building the past few years. Except we are building a distributed datacenter by placing small (up to 1200W) servers in homes. Like Linus, we also started out with a sort of radiator, but that is only useful when you actually need heat in the home, and people start asking what do you do with that heat in summer?!11!

 

So we scratched that and developed something way more awesome, we now have a mass productionable server box that provides up to 55°C water to a home, attached to that we have a 90-liter boiler, so the majority of showers and hot water use in a home is provided by our server. This saves up to 3tonnes of CO2 per year per home compared to using a regular datacenter and saves the homeowner about 200 euro's in heating costs a year. The major advantage of this is that we don't need to build a data center, and this saves us a massive infrastructural cost overhead.

 

A normal DC needs to lay down redundant power and fiber cables underground, build a building, install massive power and cooling systems and on top of that needs to provide servers. Where we place our servers fiber is already in the ground, the building and the cooling systems are built, so we just need to place a server box. This places all kinds of difficulties in terms of networking and distributed redundancy, we believe to have cracked the majority already with a 10G fiber connection to the home and an extremely low latency in between homes in a neighborhood. And if it wasn't difficult it wouldn't have been so cool to develop.

What this actually is is an entertaining and informative video that shows what you could do, not should do. Its an interesting experiment with a lighthearted edge.

 

And as for click bait, just hunting to get view count up - of course it is, but in the most positive of ways. To criticise this is to criticise all sellers of goods, they obviously want to stand out and get attention to make sales, or in this case get views.  

Do you get drawn to the grey fronted, text heavy, picture-less reference book at the library or the cool, colourful, accessible and entertaining comic based version that discusses the same topic? Its the same thing here.

If, after watching and enjoying this, it is something that you wanted to do then of course a a great deal more research into the science and feasibility of it must be done.

 

Just watch the videos and enjoy! Simple!

I remebmer my grandmother's radiators were just like that. The high temperature you got as from that metal junk itself, It get hot harder than the stuff you can get from shops right now and they get colder after a lot of time. That is the reason behind it :))
