1. Rounded corners.

 

People complain that rounded corners crops the corners of videos and distorts it.

 

a. 16:9, 16:10, 4:3 videos are all pillar boxed on these displays, so the video never reaches the rounded corners anyways.

 

b. 2.35:1 videos are letter boxed, so again, the videos don't reach the rounded corners.

 

c. The only way to reach the rounded corners is to crop the video to fill up the screen. But at that point, you are cropping the video anyways, so why would it matter if the corners got cropped too?

 

2. Notch

 

The notch actually increases the display size rather than decrease it.

 

Take the upcoming 6.5 inch iphone for example.

 

It will have a 6.5 inch 19.5:9 aspect ratio screen.

 

But if you disregard the screen beside the notch, it actually has a 6.1 inch 18:9 screen, same as any modern smartphone.

What the iphone does is remove the top bezel as much as possible, to get the notch.

 

So you get extra screen with the notch

People have to complain to complain. I got the iPhone X and I actually prefer to have the extra screen around the notch instead of having a fat chin or forehead bar if you wanna call it that. Devs know about safe spaces and work around it or with it. When you watch a 21:9 movie and it's fullscreen the amount of content in the very far right or left is nothing, that's not have framing works in movies.

Just keeping this here as a People will still see it as space that's lost and could've been used.

 

It's similar to why some people think up-scaling the GUI on a high PPI monitor is stupid. Not because the OS doesn't do it right, but because increasing screen resolution has always been in these people's minds as increasing the working space as well. Why buy a 4K monitor if your working space is stuck at the equivalent of 1440p or 1080p?

Just saying, I could care less about screen spec. Yes it is what I will be looking at 99% of the time, but I'm not one to judge a company based solely on the screens they've chosen to use for their devices. It's a lot deeper than that.

 

I also disagree with hating people because your opinion on screen real estate is what you feel should suit everyone including you.

 

My opinion has always been, and will always be: There are different devices for different people, no one device will suit everyone's needs, but the majority of people who use said device will use it because it suits them to the majority of what they use it for.

Let the buying market decide?  For me personally, I am not a fan of the notch.  It is like a table that wobbles.  You have to spend extra time working around it.  It messes with the screen symmetrical, and reduces the screen side area you can touch without worrying about smudging the display.

As for rounded and notched screens , I dislike them because the bezel has to cover a few pixels to achieve this. To have pixels that are running under a bezel but not being seen is annoying to me.

I'm pretty neutral about the whole rounded corners thing, but the only reason why I mildly dislike the iPhone X notch is that it breaks symmetry and leaves this very awkward blank space when watching media (although of course that can be hidden away by resizing the video to 16:9).

 

Ultimately though, why I absolutely hate The Notch is not because of any technical reason, but because the industry always seem to imitate Apple's footsteps.

 

Freedom of choice is always nice, but why do big manufacturers like Asus find the need to add a notch to their phones immediately after Apple releases the iPhone X?

The Essential Phone was released before the X, and it had also had a notch, but now that Apple has released a phone with a notch everyone scrambles to make something similar, for seemingly literally no other reason than "Apple did it".

We've been asking for other better features for ages (give us better battery life and cameras); but no, all those features must take the back seat, the most important thing is that Apple has released a thing and we must do the same.

It is perfectly horizontally symmetrical, but if you are talking vertica symmetry no iphone has ever been verttically symmetrical, only phone to do that was samsung and a few other androids

The problem with your theory is while the volume might be larger, the notch out of the middle is not usable. if watching a movie you'll get extra screen space on either side of the notch, but the space in between will be missing information, therefore it's not helping. The form factor of almost all media content is a rectangle, not a rectangle with two addons at the side, so your USABLE screen size hasn't changed any. 

Insanity is not the absence of sanity, but the willingness to ignore it for a purpose. Chaos is the result of this choice. I relish in both.
