At this point in time I guess I'm wondering how quickly I should rush to get a 3080 pre folding event .. any news on the when?

I've just got home to l so going to watch the presentation now.

 

Do take note that there will probably be a short delay to release and folding support, I'm not sure how long that will be, could only be a couple days or it could be much longer.

I was hopeful that since Nvidia made specific mention of folding in the keynote, that support would be sooner rather than later

Apparently not, many 3rd parties are supplying Titan grade 3090 cards due to the huge demand for other Titan versions.

Do keep in mind while performance for F@H will scale a bit better with specs that it does with gaming (so not as hard of need to WAIT FOR BENCHMARKS ^tm ) prices will likely be higher if not much higher at launch, so getting your hands on a 3080 or 3090 (3070 wont come out till "October" which could be much later into the month) will likely cost you much more especially if you're looking at AIB designs which will have their own price stacks and tiers of overclocking features.

 

TL;DR, keep your Hype train at a reasonable speed so you dont derail yourself

im gona wait to see AMD RDNA 2 VS Nvidia for F@H before upgrading not that money is an issue currently...i will either buy a 3070/3060 or the RDNA2. i honestly hope AMD comes out and drops the A Bomb on Nvidia and is 20-30% faster than nvidia and COOLER running...TEMPS will have alot to do with which one i go with too when under load.

Seeing as how I only just bought 2 x 2060 supers I don't see any more new GPUs for me any time soon "she who must be obayed" will never go for it.

Neither RTX nor Tensor FLOPs can be used for folding.

 

So a RTX 2070 is a 7.465 TFLOPs for standard precision and the 3070 is 20.31 TFLOPs so an increase of 172% or 1.3MPPD to 3.5 MPPD assuming linear scaling (i.e. no QRB)

That’s pretty impressive especially considering it has a TDP of 225W compared to 175 yielding efficiencies of 43.7and 90.26 GFLOPS/W respectively so about twice as efficient.

And good luck getting anything near full throughput from a 3090, 3080 or even a 3070 until the molecule sizes greatly increase.

God can you imagine 6milion PPD from a single card? Sure it costs $1500-$2000....
