Don't lump me in with them. I'm an enthusiast of mechanic design, be it engines, weaponry, or productive machinery. Not a guy with a wrench that reads the marketing garbage AFE/insert other "enthusiast" brand that can't legally warranty half of their products.

I fail to see a correlation between people screeching variations of "forced induction is more efficient!!! Reclaimed energy!!!" and anything I've said.

If you can't be civil. Please leave

Edit. That goes for everyone in the thread

yeah, probably will move to somewhere in canada that doesn't require emissions testing. i mean they already have less strict rules on imports, so that's already a win for gearheads.

yup no etest where i am, love it, but the rules are getting stricter for getting your vehicle certified for road use, if they pass the new rules the vehicle will have to be to exact manufacturer specs, so pretty much you can have different size wheels/tires, pretty much no mods done and say your suspension is sagging a little due to age, yup you need all new suspension, shits gonna get stupid if it passes an the used car market will be gone

At least in Ontario, the MTO has the Drive Clean Test. Vehicles over 7 years of age (and < 4500kg) need to be tested every two years at a certified shop. Ontario is the ONLY province to have mandatory emissions testing.

https://www.ontario.ca/page/drive-clean-test

http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/handbook/section5.3.3.shtml

British Columbia, specifically mainland Vancouver, used to have a similar air quality program directly tied to testing vehicle emissions, between 1992-2014. It was terminated due to the increasing efficiency of new vehicles and the decrease in legacy cars on the roads.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirCare_(emissions_program)

Alberta and Quebec have proposed their own emissions programs but they are not mandatory at the moment.

Transport Canada is also part of the Action Plan but that addresses overall greenhouse gas emissions and there isn't anything automobile specific off the top.

DriveClean is advertised pretty frequently in Toronto. Drive past most shop that do oil changes, and they'll have the emissions test poster at the door. It's a pre-requisite for registering a second-hand car IIRC.

Assuming your vehicle passes the 15 year import rule and is certified "safe" for road use...

...but it depends on which province you drive in. If it's either BC or ON, you're at the mercy of the insurance companies and provincial government regardless. It also depends on which region of the province you live in, as that plays heavily into how strict the by-laws are. Thankfully we're not like Singapore or Australia where you are heavily restricted in mods, but the vehicle must still meet basic safety and emissions regs.

I briefly forgot that the province is scrapping the emissions testing fee for DriveClean, but the program is still mandatory to certify a vehicle for our roads.

@terrytek Dude, move to Oregon. No inspections, no emissions,(if you stay out of Portland) and no road salt. (and legal weed if you're over 21 and into that sort of thing.) (I'm not, but for some that is a perk)

i might consider oregon. california's only a state border away, the weather i heard is pretty nice, and i want to go visit oregon. i might even consider going to school there, if out of state costs aren't prohibitively expensive.

so apparently the new e63 has dropped the previous 5.5l twin turbo v8 and just went for the current 4.0l v8. i doubt it's that noticeable, since they really both sound the same. http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-shows/los-angeles-auto-show/news/a30966/2018-mercedes-amg-e63/, and the cool thing is that even though it's all wheel drive, you can actually deactivate the front diff by holding both paddles, making it essentially rwd. that's actually LEGIT COOL.

Just wanted to warn you. It also forces you to have good tires.

Most Californians here are on the 5 year plan.

Come up in the summer, think they like it, buy a house, get about 3 years in and decide they hate the rain so they put the house on the market, pack their stuff and get back to Cali year 4, house sells year 5.

For gearheads, the climate doesn't get much better than California with some nice places to drive. Just a shame that just about everything else about California is pretty terrible which regrettably includes the condition of the roads themselves.

As for inspections, California does not care if you roll up in a car held together by duct tape and leaking pools so long as it passes emissions.

In California, all your car needs to do is pass the emissions. California does not care at all if the car is a complete rust bucket with flat tires and no suspension to speak of as long as it passes emissions. If it explodes on the person testing it, then there may be a problem, but Barring that, California can hardly be called strict compared to the likes of Japan.

well i meant with mods and stuff. like there are mods that aren't 50 state legal. hell, there are intakes that aren't even 50 state legal, it's hell trying to mod your car while keeping it legal. trying to pass emissions with mods is the issue. if you have a stock car with no mods, then you should pass no problem. i'm talking when you start messing with engine mods, like adding a turbo, upgrading exhaust systems, etc. that's what i meant.

Perhaps, though I've rarely ever seen the tech go further than just a quick glance under the hood before commencing the test. Logic dictates so long as mods are not overly obvious (a fart can constitutes as obvious), and you're not running catless, you will probably be fine.

Just make sure your mods look stock. Turbo can probably be stashed out of sight or covered, additional covers and plastic may also be fabricated, no shiny or brightly colored components, etc.
