I fail to see a correlation between people screeching variations of "forced induction is more efficient!!! Reclaimed energy!!!" and anything I've said.

I wonder what the ND will be like in terms of engine swaps in 10-15 years. Besides LS engines... which are expensive to do.

yeah thats a tough question... I'd say K24 like @PandaCopyRight but idk how much desire people will have to put an older engine into the car, plus emissions is harder when you're swapping an older engine into a newer car... and I don't really see any new great NA 4 bangers coming out from any manufacturer with the way emissions and mpg requirements are headed.  maybe if someone makes a really good boosted engine?  but then why not just boost the existing engine?  I mean right now nobody seams to be making more than about 240whp with it cause of the small exhaust ports... so idk.. there isn't an obvious answer.. there's no new hero 4 banger like the K24 right now...

Nobody is going to make another desirable engine to swap. Mid 2000s are the best years for modifying cars.

The ND is getting a big power jump in 2019. 181 HP at that weight and price makes it extremely enticing.

yeah I'm with you there.  however, 181 hp out of a 2.0 in this day and ages is still not impressive... honda has been doing 100hp/L for over 2 decades now, mazda still isn't hitting that?  I mean I'm not saying they can't, I just can't figure out why they don't

Mazda is prioritizing torque instead of peak HP. Those old honda motors didn't produce any torque, plus were in much heavier cars later on. Who knows, those HP figures may be with regular gas. The skyactivs like premium.

My feeling is they know from their partnership with toyota that the BRZ about to get a power jump next gen, so they wana beat them to the punch on that.

I mean cool but now it'll be equivalent to an S2000 instead of slightly below it? just kinda expect more after some years

you do have a good point there... it makes a lot of torque for a 2.0.  Honda's, specifically the K series engines, made plenty of torque if you look at it from a torque/displacement point of view.  More torque than most other engines, although the ND has it beat, the 2.0 makes about as much torque as the K24 with .4L more displacement.  but if you compare a 3.5L V6 to a 2.0 and just look at torque values, of course the honda is gonna seam like little torque.

the 86 twins don't need more power as much as they need to get rid of that torque dip... a friend of mine has a brz and we're pretty much even from a roll, but driving his car, it feels so much slower...

Which a very clean, non shit AP2 is within a few thousand of a new ND. 150 HP is just too low even with the torque it makes. Thats as much HP as my mazda 3 and its 8 years older and port injected.

Torque seems to be the fad now days thanks to turbos in everything. Honda has done a complete 180 and went to torquey turbos. I prefer NA though.

Yeah, the torque dip seems bad. Rumor is that it'll be getting a 2.4 NA motor.

I have driven my roommate's BRZ a fair amount. It is hugely underwhelming to me, even compared to a bone stock 20 year old M3. The handling is good, the brakes are good, but the engine is simply gutless. 200hp has never felt so freaking slow to me, and it's entirely due to the complete lack of torque. I was very disappointed that a brand new BRZ was slower, less fun, rode worse, and handled worse than a 20 year old M3.

Keep in mind, the E36 M3 and BRZ are similar lb/hp cars, right around 13.5 lb/hp. One key difference is torque and torque plateau vs torque dip.

to be fair, for a daily driver, mid to low torque makes more sense than top end power... and that makes sense in a mazda 3... but the miata is supposed to be a sports car, give it some more top end... which I guess they're doing with the '19 model, but idk, I'd like to see at least 200whp

Holy balls thats absurdly quick.

Reports are that Jani enters Eau Rouge at ~300kph, whereas a GT3 car barely manages 200.
