Anybody actually being pushed to Linux or Mac because of the Windows 11 screen recording or is it just something not to worry about?

Windows has been spying on you to at least some degree since NT 4.0, are people jumping ship or did they gradually boil the frog?

If you think NOW is the only time Microsoft has been recording your screen activity then you're very naïve indeed.  I say that being a ferment Windows user since Windows 3.1.  I just simply don't care what they're grabbing to be honest.  The only way they could use it against me (if I were doing anything nefarious) is to blow the whole "We've been secretly recording your screen all along" 'thing' wide open

With all the Trolls, Try Hards, Noobs and Weirdos around here you'd think i'd find SOMEWHERE to fit in!

I've never been okay with the spying, and many of us (myself included) have gone out of our way (mostly by downloading a program someone else spent a lot of time making) to disable all the bullshit. I've never once paid for Windows in my life, mostly because I've always gone for the long term business versions, disable Windows Update, and then water it down from there. Personally I've hated Windows 11 the whole time since they went out of their way to make it more "Mac" like. But at this point, I think the few games I play will work on Linux so when the time comes, I'll likely switch over to a more gaming centric/friendly distro.

I do think the "common person" won't know about this unless us techies blow it up to the point it makes national headlines. Even then I'm not sure how many people would switch away for fear that whatever it is they do won't work on a different platform. That and the learning curve of learning a new platform.

Too soon to decide that.

if it can't be deactivated, or there's no third party way of disabling it or preventing it from sending the shots to server.

Then I will move,

to Windows 10  =P

Windows 10 didn't honor user settings after updates, it resets to default. Windows 11 can do the same.

Dunno, AFAIK, my 10 settings stays the same after update.

Likewise with my 11.

Not like I let it update by itself anyway, I'm too used to manual update

I think the 4-5% of people within our 4-5% of entire PC users are just gonna get the voices squashed like they always have

I'm not sure how many of them even use Windows or Mac to begin with. I'd assume the "smarter" ones use some kind of Linux distro.

So smart they think they can get away with it in the first place?

I mean, unfortunately, a lot of them do. We only ever know of the ones that get caught.

Guarantee you though they weren't caught by Microsoft handing over screen capture data

Well 2020 and 2021 the US government started throwing money at us like we were strippers. I used some of my stimulus payment to purchase a MacBook Pro. I use MacOS as my daily driver and Windows is merely for gaming. Would I give up on Windows all together? Sure. SteamOS proved that gaming on Linux can work and I have a Steam Deck, which many of the games I enjoy work on it. Ive considered going gaming handheld only for gaming at some point.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

I've switched to Linux(Ubuntu) a little while ago. Ubuntu works fine for me and comes preinstalled with some useful apps. My next laptop will likely be a MacBook. I'm done with Windows shoving unnecessary bloatware down my throat and whatever that mess W11 is.

Though if I were still using Windows and heard of this feature, that's certainly where I would draw the line and switch. But again, that's because of my low dependency on Windows. Maybe in the future I'd get a decent PC and play some games, in which case I don't think I would have an option other than Windows.

I am getting pretty fucking sick and tired of the "watch something else" responses. It's such a cop out answer because you could say that about basically anything, and it doesn't address the actual complaints. People use it as some kind of card they pull when they can't actually respond to the criticism raised but they still feel like they need to defend some company/person. If you don't like this thread then stop reading it. See how stupid it is? It's basically like telling someone "shut the fuck up". It's not a clever responsive, it doesn't address anything said, and it is rude.

I would love to switch to Linux. I even have a GPU with available Linux Drivers. The problem is compatibility with software. Maybe I'll try booting into Linux, but not now and not as my main OS.

Definetly never Mac because of no upgradability and the lack of compatible games. Apple has never been the same level of consumer reliability since Steve Jobs died.

Of course it will NEVER flag false positives, because AI is so reliable.  Theres plenty of porn where an 18yro could pass for 16, what does the AI do then?

If anything, if it gets used in this way it will cause LESS prosecutions of the real thing, as the police will be inundated with false positives.

Well there is no excuse for them add even more spyware into the OS. IMO the data collection and ads are enough, forcing the "feature" of taking screenshots of everything you do on your system is what makes me want to full time switch to Linux. There is also the fact that Microsoft is actively blocking things which make the start menu more usable and turn off the ads.

But it would be nice if Valve would offer Steam OS as a public release for non-steam deck hardware.

SteamOS is just linux though, what you described is literally just a regular linux distro, which you can download at any time lol

I have a speculation that Microsoft wants their OS customers to switch to Linux because they just want out of that responsibility. For better or worse, Windows is like Utility infrastructure like Electricity and Water. A lot of people here would say "for worse" and I think Microsoft agrees, the OS market doesn't make money like it did in the 90's or mid 00's and it feels like microsoft is digging under the sofa cushions for coins with all these ads. I think they much rather have Azure and Office be a utility and it is, but the world still depends on Windows. I also think Microsoft will control Linux and I think they might already do, they own github and they're a top contributor to the Linux Foundation.

If Linux overtakes Windows, I might switch to BSD, companies may make a proprietary forks and you can Tivoize Linux, but companies usually don't try to corrupt the BSD upstream. The BSD core utils have very simple and minimalist code, GNU is a huge mess. BSD is like that missing link between Linux and TempleOS. Terry Davis said "Linux is a Semi-Truck and TempleOS is a motorcycle", but I think if eBikes were popular within his lifetime he would say "Linux is a Semi Truck, BSD is a Motorcycle and TempleOS is an eBike" in a sense of organizational complexity.

Nah, I don't think so.

Here's mine :
Either you use Win 11 for "free" and accept whatever shenanigans on it, OR you use Win 10 and pay them exponentially higher each subsequent year for security updates support. 🤣

Never had any major problem with my Macbook Pro and its kinda old at this point, its the last gen intel model. As far as upgradability goes, many Windows based laptops have the same issue.

Not all of them. And the RAM issue with Windows laptops will soon be fixed with CAM2
