Intel to be working its own dedicated graphics

intel Kaby Lake G was the very first cpu from Intel that used a 3rd party graphics, other than their own, and it looks like it might also be the last. After Kaby Lake G with AMD Radeon VEGA, it's said that future Intel cpus will be using their own dedicated graphics rather than those from 3rd party such as AMD. Their own dedicated graphics are code name Arctic Sound and Jupiter Sound, which is for their 12th gen and 13th gen graphics. It will also use the a EMIB connect just like Kaby Lake G with the AMD Radeon VEGA. As of now Intel graphic's is at 9th gen, so it will take some time until we see Arctic Sound and Jupiter Sound.

Well they did poach the head of radeaons graphics devision so it is entirely possible that they succeed this time around.

We will see how they will fair against AMD APUs and NVIDIA low end mobile dGPUs (i.e. *50). 

 

Definitely some technology/knowledge spillovers happened with the partnership for Kaby Lake G (which I am still unsure why AMD accepted it) and the poaching of Raja Koduri. 

 

EDIT: I am aware that it is still going to be profitable for AMD to partner with Intel, but it if there was something they had an edge on in the mobile market was graphics. That’s why I am not completely sure about the strategic choice. I should research it better.

Meh.. we have had news on this for so long.... and yet not ever any product in the market... I wouldn't mind replacing nVidia for an Intel should they have the best performance but at this point where Intel Iris Pro 580 is still their best graphical processing silicon and it's like a GTX 750 in performance only I doubt they can do much other than compete on the low end against AMD and the GT line up.

Well if they give him free reign( and the big monies ), and they pull out a modern 4870 or 9700 Pro for Intel things can get very interesting. Man forget Raja was there with ATI in their best days; not just around in AMD for Polaris and Vega.

If you look at the efficiency of Intel's integrated GPUs per core these designs could really be something. Though this is reliant on whether or not the architecture can actually scale up well. From people I've talked to, the Larabee project was actually not bad in terms of competitiveness before it was shut down.

 

Raja knows his stuff so I'm excited to see the designs, though rumour has it we won't see products until 2020.

So it really was just a stop gap to use AMD Vega to fight AMD mobile APUs until there own IP is ready. Way to go AMD (sarcasm). AMD could use the cash but now they lost out on the long term for shorter term gain. Intel is going to win the most if their own dGPUs don't end up sucking. If AMD didn't agree to supply Intel, AMD could have really brought back some much needed market share. Now it could be much harder for them to get back at Intel.

 

Also, could AMD legally have not done a deal with Intel, like they did with Sony, and Microsoft with their Custom Chip division. Basically like the whole Cake thing selling to gays(sorry but good example)? Can they refuse service to companies they don't like or agree with?

If they have a contractual agreement with the company, and any competent company would draw up a contract, then they are legally obligated to fulfill the contract or face the possibility of a lawsuit due to a breach of contract.

 

Otherwise they can do business with whoever they feel like doing business with.

Of course, but I think there's an angle at play here that people are forgetting: selloff of Radeon. It's an albatross for AMD at the moment and a black eye apart from mining. The partnership on Vega could very well be the prelude of a selloff with an agreement to have access to the tech for 5 years for upcoming consoles and things. And Intel would be foolish to not sell designs to AMD when the goal is to put Nvidia in its place.

How is it an albatross? I'm sure they are making money from it with all the sales. Sure Vega was disappointing but it wasn't a total flop. It's actually quite an amazing product when comparing to resource rich Nvidia who also dominates the market that RT Group are able to produce a relatively high end and competitive product. The only reason I would see them sell it is to get away from the direct fire of negative comments from the loud and always more power hungry PC gamers.

The GPU division actually makes less money, even with the mining craze, vs. the CPU division now that Ryzen is selling, and resource wise it's 2/3 of the company when you account for semi-custom, the driver team, their open graphics library development, etc.. Also, Intel would pay a damn pretty penny for RTG and more than settle the old ATI buyout debt (still going by the way) in the purchase.

It should also be noted that raja had little control over Polaris and Vega because of how far along in development they were when he was put in charge.

Exactly, he came back September 2015; after Fiji was launched and when Polaris was done; and Vega mostly done also.

Will be interesting to see what he can do from start to finish again. Hopefully Intel go all in and don't cut corners, especially for drivers.

AMD is selling them completed GPUs, so the IP interactions are actually fairly minimal.

 

The announced products are either starting in 2019 or 2020. This might be the 2020 & 2021 products, which points to them going into development around 2016 at the latest. While these will be dGPUs, I'd be really surprised if we see them in the consumer space. Intel wants that Server GPU Compute money.

i have a feeling that kaby lake G, intel creating a new graphics division and raja moving to intel are all connected.

Intel doing real GPUs would be awesome to no end.

A third, or even fourth competitor would be so sweet.

 

Right now we just have to hope AMD catches up all the time, but they fail to push NVidia enough. With more competitors it would still suck if one fails, but others could still do the pushing.

I'd actually welcome this. The iGPU is dead space as far as most of us are concerned.
