They could try to create something close to the Intel Atom and find a niche within certain segments of the Chinese market. e.g. it could become the CPU in networking devices like routers, switches etc. Then they go through multiple generations of R&D, work their way up and perhaps someday they will compete with Intel and AMD on the high end.

VIA have a LOT of experience, they are hardly just popping up. While I doubt these will be up there with the 1800x but they have a massive amount of experience, and could very well have been working on this for quite a while. I can definitely see them reaching Ryzen 3 at least in some ways

But yeah, I doubt anyone outside of china really cares about VIA CPUs. They don't have great brand history in the west. Their chipsets were almost always buggy and plenty of driver issues, that's why they don't really exist anymore, at least in the home space(in the west)

I said "without SMT", but most people don't know what SMT is, and if I said, "no simultaneous mult-threading, they'll think I mean that the CPU can't do 2 things at the same time, despite multiple cores. Not everyone knows, but they have a general idea of what Hyper-Threading is, so it is easier to say: "no Hyper-Threading like technology", instead "We interrupt this news for a computer science class on how a CPU works and what SMT is"

Damn this is cool! Only ever had boards with via chipsets on them and never a via cpu. I may get one of the mid-top end variants just to play around with if its available in my region when it comes out  

 

Still want to get a cyrix based system haven't been able to find any from their glory days  Via bought them so We will technically have a successor here to them

HyperThreading is an implementation of simultaneous multithreading. AMD's implementation is similar.

 

Similarly G-Sync and FreeSync are an implementations of variable refresh rate.

Not really much to see for a Cyrix system, no functional difference and worse performance. I had one . Was still able to play AoE/AoE2/EE/Diablo 2 etc though.

For me its the whole thing of just having it  I love to collect old hardware. Hell I still use almost all of mine specifically to have that "original software on original hardware feeling

Runs 32 and 64-bit like the CPU you have in your PC.

"x86" is just an architecture name. It could have been called "PocketNerdUltimateCPUArch", but I am not Intel. Intel is the creator of the x86 architecture.

Yep just depends on how long it takes them to get this product out and how much they capitalize on this. If they have stuff to show off really soon, (I really hope they're are ces, that would be amazing!) It would work better in their favour then if they waited a few months. Although it also depends on any lawsuits that come out of Intel's fuckery. Those becoming talking points in the future would also have the same effect if their product is later in the year.

While the security flaws with Intel are true many people are just being hard on Intel just because they can.

I'm aware, but that and a lack of education on the issue is still going to lower their already falling (albeit slowly) market share. Intel is entering a slump, VIA might be poised to take good advantage of that.

I doubt you'll see VIA chips outside of China in 2018. We might hear more about their next chips, but selling world wide is very costly, and they need to have the manufacturing capabilities for this, not to mention that they need to build trust with OEMs and OEMs needs to see that their PCs with VIA chips sells.

That will take a very long time. Perhaps they can manufacture their own motherboards too.
