Xeon E3 line to be renamed to "Xeon Entry" (Coffee Lake)

Another day, another Intel product lineup! Intel has announced the successor to the Xeon E3 1200 v6 line. The new line of Xeon processors will be called "Xeon Entry". As Ian Cutress says

Quote

This scheme had been in place for five or six generations, but was then flipped on its head when Intel announced the change of the Xeon E5 and E7 processor lines to the Xeon Scalable Platform, Xeon-SP, using heavy metals as the naming. More recently, the workstation-focused Xeon E5-1600 line was also renamed to Xeon W, for workstation.

Intel's naming schemes have become train wrecks both for the consumer and the enterprise markets.  The naming for the new Intel Xeon lineups is as follows:

Xeon E3(non-scalable): Xeon Entry (LGA 1151-2?)

Xeon E5(non-scalable): Workstation (LGA 2066)

Xeon E5(scalable): Scalable (LGA 3647)

Xeon E7(scalable): Scalable (LGA 3647)

The two processors that were announced were mobile Coffee Lake Xeons. These are the third generation of mobile Xeons and will likely have six cores.

Sooooo RIP bronze, silver, gold, and platinum? I don't even understand their branding anymore.

EDIT: Okay so the metals remain but why different naming schemes within Xeon?

Personally I think they should have just made it E3, E5, E7, and E9 (or E7x because Intel likes X)

I believe that the naming scheme is only for the LGA3647 compatible Xeons.

They did...for the Xeon 5/7 replacements. They really should have just kept the E3/5/7 nomenclature.

Just rename it to Core i7*

With ECC, as to not further confuzzle customers.

Bronze, Silver and Gold is still being used just not on the consumer cpus. They're for socket 3467 where bronze will have the lowest core count vs platinum with the highest core count.

They broke compatibility in the following ways since Skylake:

1. Xeon E3(Entry) and Core processors can no longer be used in the same motherboards.

2. Xeon E5(Workstation) and Core i7 processors can no longer be used in the same motherboards.

3. A Xeon E5 1600 Series(Workstation) CPU cannot be used in a Xeon E5 2600 Series(Scalable) board and vice versa due to physically different sockets(LGA 2066 and LGA 3647).

Because they're i7s with ECC support and... that's about it.

Core i7's are not scalable in any way.

Aren't the E3s and E5 (LGA 2066 one) non-scalable too?

Yes, but those are basically Core i7's with a few enterprise-grade features. The scalable Xeons are far more exciting!
