It probably won't make any difference, but at least we won't go silently into the dark. we can give one final gesture to the smartphone zeitgeist for taking away our ports for our fancy headphones.

Agreed, a phone being 0.25mm thinner is much more important than being able to use whatever earphones you want without having to carry around an adapter that also makes it impossible to charge when using.

If we just replace 3.5mm to USB type C then there isn't an issue.

While I own a pair of QC35 from Bose, I will not buy a phone without a headphone jack. While I do use my headphones wirelessly for the most part- a 8-12 hour battery life is not enough- especially during international travel. 

 

I watch a lot of movies on my phone during my 15hour SEA-DXB + 2hour stop-over + 4hour DXB-Asia flight, and the only way my headphones last is by having them wired in via the 3.5mm hack wherein they don't consume as much power while my phone charges; Being forced into having to chose whether to enjoy the media or having my devices charge instead of doing both at the same time is just silly and anti-consumer, and a phone without a headphone jack is one that can do without being in my pocket.

To anyone who champions the death of the headphone jack.

 

Um, you’re missing something.

 

Unlike Google, which ACTUALLY uses a universal standard that all my USB-C crap can utilize fully, manufacturers like Motorola and HTC use PROPRIETARY standards on a universal port. Which means the adapter with my Moto Z flat out does not work with my Galaxy Note8 or my ASUS laptop. 

 

Sorry, but how is this progress? You’re replacing a universal standard that’s almost guaranteed to work to an absolute clusterfuck full of a bazillion different standards on the same connection that you have no idea whether it works on your phone or not until you’ve wasted a few bucks and tried it only to find out it only works for a specific type of device.

 

I hope Google actually forces everyone to use the same damn standard. I’m sick of buying different dongles only to find that they don’t work at all on my USB-C crap while some $5 earbuds on a hack work on my 2 phones, my laptop and that random MP3 player.

Given the lack of standardization in the Android Segment concerning USB C, I don't think it is prime time for removing the 3.5mm jack. Apple can do so without a lot of problems as they have a standard in place that manufacturers of the adapters adhere to.

 

USB-C doesn't (yet) have that luxury. As an example, adaptors that work with one phone may not work with another. In addition, there may be longevity and durability concerns with the (arguably vital) port pulling double duty and enduring heavy abuse while used in a pocket, perhaps even more so as the port doesn't allow for twisting. If the headphone jack breaks, the phone can charge and transfer data as normal. If the USB-C jack fails, then it sucks to be you. The Lightning port certainly isn't immune either.

He's referencing how long it's been on phones - lots of feature phones in the mid to late 2000s had 2.5mm jacks.
