Makes sense, no one sells WP anymore.  When his assistant went to get him a phone, the sheer number of options would have been huge,  iphone or android.  They must have spent ages in turmoil trying to work out which one Bill would appreciate more.

You can bet they'll either:

  • They'll remove the number completely
  • OR do: iPhone X (2018) model, and iPhone 9, and then for iPhone 10 in 2019, then say "it doesn't make sense to have 2 premium models", and call it just iPhone 11. But seeing that the iPhone 11 doesn't sound right, at a marketing level. They'll just call it iPhone (2020)

But yes, Microsoft bailed out Apple but it's more of an patent cross license agreement and that Internet Explorer will be preinstalled and will be the default browser on OS 9 to Mac OS X Jaguar.

So it peaked* my interest about the MS saving Apple thing,  Re-reading articles on it now to see if what I remember was true. And one thing I don't remember, is there being a pocket of people denying it. It appears over time that there is a growth of people who think apple would have survived just fine without MS office and IE being native to MAC and supported by MS.

I remember that time well. Forget the investment, simply making office and IE native to Mac would have been enough.  I have heard that many people say how much they loved their macs but it pained them no end that nothing was compatible.

But after the agreement and how they made Office for Mac with the same releases as in Windows, the likes of Adobe & others followed the and made programs for the Mac.

I can't help but picture Gates experiencing an epiphany the first time he uses his Android phone: "Oh.... oh.  OH.  No wonder we lost in mobile."

 

For those who forget: Gates, Ballmer and other execs were notorious for maintaining rigidly Microsoft-only households.  They'd refuse to even try the competition.  They thought they were showing company loyalty, but it also created a profound blindness to Microsoft's problems.  They didn't know why the iPod was kicking the Zune's ass; why the iPhone and Android were quantum leaps over Windows Mobile; why the iPad was so much better for the average person than a Windows 7 tablet with pen support grafted on top.  You get the impression that Windows Phone 7 would have shown up a year or more sooner if Ballmer had actually used the iPhone instead of dismissing it.
