i9-7980XE: Overclocked to run all 18 cores beyond 6 GHz

Since today's the day of the news embargo lift, another der8auer video appeared on YouTube, showing the German professional overclocker managed to oc the Intel i9-7980XE to over 6.1 GHz on all 18 cores, of course only possible through liquid nitrogen cooling on an ASUS Rampage 6 Apex. He and the other overclockers came together for a meet-up in Taiwan at ASUS ROG headquarters and reached some new world records, once again.

Am I the only one who does not see any practical use with this kind of "content"? You can't reliably use the computer on this configuration aside the stupid expensive costs of it, it is completely disconnected to reality.

yes its not a real usable product at 6 GHz but its interesting to see how much the architecture can handle.

You compete for the highest clock possible... yes, you have to be lucky to get good chips but these people usually have more than just one CPU and are also usually sponsored.

Where is the use in throwing a speer 100m for an olympic medal?

Those are not at all related to this type of work.

 

This is like saying, well if I use racing fuel, new air intake and flames on my cobalt on the sides I can reach 130mph. Like cool bro, but the rest of us are driving 60 99% of the time. Basically bragging rights but means jack all in terms of real world use, even for overclockers

The only good analogy there was the javelin throwing for the olympics. The other ones don't quite fit with this scenario, I understand your point but I truly don't see the point of LN2 overclocking and why this stuff makes news. It is cool-ish (pun intended) I guess.

It's not practical for anything other than people do it for enjoyment. They don't have to have a reason to other than people enjoy pushing hardware to the ultimate limit. Think of top fuel drag racing, they build a machine to go a fast as they can for 1000m (they don't actually go a full 1/4mile anymore) just to fry the motor and spend thirty minutes to entirely tear it down an rebuild it. It's a rush to push something to the limits.

What you're missing is to us, this IS entertainment. I find this stuff interesting. It's just like how some people don't find gaming entertaining. But we do.
