Microsoft cuts off Windows 10 (Creators Update) support early for some PCs

Update:

 

Microsoft confirms that the issue is that Intel cutting off driver support for the platform, so systems with these chipset will not run the Creators Update properly.

Microsoft is saying that Anniversary Update will be available for the affected system, and Microsoft will deliver them security updates until 2023. This is the same time as Windows 8.1 extended support ends, which was the OS that these system came with.

 

But most likely, if you have these systems, you probably already upgraded, due to their extreme slowness that these CPUs provided even at the time (barely played 1080p 30fps videos)

It seems Microsoft is becoming like Android OEMs, not supporting a plethora of devices.

Yes they did promised updates this is Microsoft being a jerk in my opinion. ZDNet's Ed Bott confirms that many PCs especially the ones running on Intel Clovertrail CPUs which was released when Windows 8 was released. Obviously, a lot of people downloaded the Windows 10 free update back in 2015 under the pretense that their devices will receive Windows 10 updates for a long time.

But when Windows Update tries to install the March 2017 Creators Update, version 1703, the installation fails with a dire (and confusing) message that reads:

Windows 10 is no longer supported on this PC

Uninstall this app now because it isn't compatible with Windows 10.

Don't be fooled by that message. There's no app to uninstall. This problem occurs because of a fundamental incompatibility between the PC hardware and the latest release of Windows 10.

I've received multiple reports of this problem, which affects devices built around Intel's Atom Clover Trail series CPUs. Those chips first appeared in entry-level Windows 8 PCs, especially 2-in-1 devices, between four and five years ago. I was able to confirm that this hard block exists by attempting to install the Creators Update on an HP Envy X2, which uses a Clover Trail CPU, the Atom Z2760. HP shipped me the device in early 2015 and I've used it in lab tests as a benchmark for low-spec CPUs. The compatibility check that's part of the Windows Setup program gave this system a clean bill of health, but after downloading more than 3GB of setup files for the Creators Update, the upgrade failed, with the error message shown above.

 

There's no easy way to work around the block, either. Unless and until the underlying compatibility issue is fixed, this device is stuck on Windows 10, version 1607.

And that's a big problem for owners of those devices. In the "Windows as a Service" model, Microsoft's servicing policy says, "Each Windows 10 feature update will be serviced with quality updates [security and reliability fixes] for 18 months from the date of the feature update release." If Microsoft sticks to its announced support deadlines, any device running Windows 10 version 1607 will stop receiving updates in early 2018. In some cases, this cutoff date will be only three years after those devices were placed in service.

Even PC OEM Acer published an article which Intel SoCs will not receive the Creators Update:

If you have already installed Creators Update and are experiencing problems, you can use Windows 10 recovery options to restore your system to the previous build.

I encourage everyone to read the ZDNet article. As it turns out Microsoft's Terry Myerson said that Microsoft will keep releasing updates for the supported lifetime of the device. What does he mean by supported lifetime of the device? Also, it's too early for Microsoft to cut off support for devices from 2012. Even Apple is still maintaining support for older Macs like the 2009 polycarbonate MacBook and 2009 iMac.

In fact, the said devices will still receive the High Sierra update. With Windows 10, we are talking about devices from 2012 that are no longer supported. What dick move Microsoft. Someone might say that Apple can keep supporting older hardware is because the install base of macOS is smaller than Windows. It's true that Mac market share is way smaller than Windows 10 but Microsoft is a bigger company than Apple and has more resources for R&D to keep devices from 2012 still receiving support. If that's the case, I won't be surprised if suddenly Microsoft halts updates for PCs still rocking old Intel CPUs like Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge. 

 

Edit: Someone pointed out to me that the Clover trail SoCs are using an old GPU namely the PowerVR Series 5, this is the same GPU that the iPhone 4 from 2010 uses. If that's the case, then I could understand why Microsoft may have halted the support for PCs rocking a Clover trail SoC. It's possible that the company Imagination Technologies no longer releases up to date graphics drivers for Windows 10 Creators Update. Oops. ?

 

But it's quite unfortunate that those people who bought a cheap Atom Windows 8 tablet back in 2012 because of budget concerns will no longer receive the latest and greatest OS update from Microsoft.

They would be murdered by the business world for doing so. Many, many companies--not all of them small--are still relying on stacks of Sandy Bridge-powered workstations.

I swear if they start doing this part by part and it effects those awesome Core2Quad budget rigs I'm going to strongly consider Hackintosh dual booting.

The  problem here is that IIRC most intel Macs are core series (core 2 duo up to i7)  or XEON based, not low clocked low power atoms.....more often than not, atoms are in devices running embedded or highly customized builds of WIndows

To be clear, is there actually any legitimate reason for dropping support at all, or is it just a conspiracy between them and hardware makers to make PCs into disposable, fast-rotating devices for no reason and sell more of them?  Because if that's what's happening, might finally be time to jump to Linux once and for all.

Honestly I much prefer Mac OS. But you know games

Either way It'll most likely be cleared up soon enough.  I can't see it being some big conspiracy to end support early.

The devices in question are clover trail Atoms. OEM only, discontinued, and completely unsupported. It is as per the support lifetime part of the W10 lifecycle that Microsoft had since release of Win10.

Forced installations of Windows 10, forced automatic updates, forced data-collection, forced Windows 10 apps (Windows Store), forced in-OS ads, forced / resetting Windows configurations, forced no-updates for newer CPUs in Win 7 / 8... I'm surprised people are still struggling to understand what Microsoft is, now: they're aren't primarily a software company... they're more like a patent-troll or adware company now - one that holds the IP to the world's most installed software. And Microsoft is using it to force people's money into their pockets in any way they think they can get away with.

It reads to me like this was almost a fluke, an unintended problem porting a resource-hungry version of Windows to a low-power chip populating systems that, for the most part, have 2GB of RAM or less. The fact that Microsoft seems to feel no real sense of urgency to go back and make everything play nice together is unsurprising given the niche nature of the CPU. I promise you that had Microsoft accidentally (or otherwise) dropped support for any desktop platform as far back as Conroe, perhaps all the way back to the hyperthreaded P4 CPUs, they would be under much more pressure to fix that ish and not pull that stunt again.

I can't think of anything. Granted at the moment, only Intel Clovertrail/Atom CPUs aren't supported but I think it was the Atom chips which pushed the Windows on a tablet concept. Still a dick move.

I can't see a legitimate reason for them to forcibly terminate function of the device under any circumstances.  Worst they should ever do would be to stop providing updates for it if there is a valid reason to do so (it can't run it anymore, etc.).  No matter what you should be at least able to continue using what you had, since obviously it was working.  As it ages, whether you'll want to keep using it may become another story, but that's besides the point.

The only problem I see is you don't get the ease of upgrading whenever they update MacOS and the amazing optimization. To see a computer from 2008 be able to edit videos in Final Cut at 1080p with no timeline lag at full res playback is truly amazing. The rest of the industry should take note

I'll take this phrase from Louis Rossmann, You don't become like Apple by copying everything wrong with Apple (although in this case OS support is something Apple excels at, at least on their phones)

Well the dialog that pops up makes it look like they're forcing you to uninstall Windows 10 because it's no longer supported.  I guess this isn't so bad then... sounds pretty reasonable tbh.

Probably just a default message MS pops up when there is hardware it can't work on.  I.E like when the manufacturer doesn't provide a driver.

 

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

Going back today, Louis Rossmann is right. But to be fair, Apple still support polycarbonate MacBooks from 2009 rocking an old Core 2 Duo.

But why? Atom is probably the one that pushed Windows 8 on a tablet concept.

I used to be completely ok with Microsoft, but after Windows 8, and now Windows 10....combined with Apples recent revelation that people want powerful machines (see the 2017 5K iMac)......It is very likely that my next Desktop will not be a PC. 

 

I'm all for hardware options....but when Windows becomes objectively worse than MacOS that's is a problem that I can't just ignore. 

 

Now my PC has a 4690K in it so I don't need or want to replace it soon and this cut off doesn't really effect me, but it does show M$s true colors even more than Windows 10 does.

For these particular chips, aren't the GPUs designed by Imagination Technologies? Considering what's going on with them, what of their driver support I wonder?
