FCC has voted to OVERTURN Net Neutrality

I'd like to start by saying I couldn't find anything in the Tech News Section - so if there is an original article, I apologise.

Net Neutrality came into place in 2015 under the supervision of FCC Chair Man - Tom Wheeler.

Well, 2 years later, it has been removed under the new FCC advisor Ajit Pai.

The Commissioners at the FCC decided to vote 2:1 on whether or not to kill of Net Neutrality.

My Pai has said on multiple times that:

Quote

an open internet harmed jobs and discouraged investment

My quick note: Excuse me? What????

For those who don't know what net neutrality is, oh I'm sorry, Was:

Quote

Net neutrality is WAS the principle that Internet service providers and governments regulating the Internet should treat all data on the Internet the same, not discriminating or charging differentially by user, content, website, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or mode of communication

2

After looking through multiple articles: it's more the fact that this was a preliminary vote,

A final vote is due later in the Year.

My thoughts:

WHAT THE ACTUAL F**K AMERICA?!?!?

Net Neutrality was a great thing. it allowed for more fairness in a market controlled by the few big ISPs

and allowed for all content to be delivered on an equal playing field - not a "Premium Fast Lane"

Also - Surprise, Surprise - Ajit Pai was actually "Associate General Counsel" at Verizon Communications, a company that has always been against Net Neutrality.

Something which shows that ISP's will do anything to get out of the Title 2 classification where they can't charge for such services.

A chart found on the DailyDot website shows what companies are spending the most to dismantle Net Neutrality.

Spoiler

LobbyingReportsMentioningNN.png

And I have a feeling that most of that went on Lobbying all members of the FCC / Governement who are against the FCC.

Here is another chart to show the momentum of which Lobbying has increased over Net Neutrality:

Spoiler

TotalLobbyingExpendituresofTop20.png

I honestly think lobbying should be made illegal since its basically putting wallets before what is in the best interest of the people.

Will it ever stop? No, not when there is money to be made - but it doesn't make it any more right.

Net neutrality did almost nothing. ISPs still screwed you in certain sites and your download speed.

But it was illegal, and meant you could sue them.

What are the US and the UK doing? We seem to be being governed by complete morons who also happen to be evil.

Here in the UK, we're facing China-esque regulation and censoring on what we can post/say on the internet if the Conservative Party is re-elected. We were making some good progress on utilising the internet to its potential as an open and unbiased medium for communication, information and all sorts of other things, yet now we're going in completely the opposite direction.

Trump's administration is all about removing regulation, so I'm not very surprised. I'm a little saddened since this isn't what I wanted, but it hasn't made a difference to speeds and throttling in the area I moved from, and the area I recently moved into just gave me gigabit yesterday with no limits and no contracts required. Really sucks that the companies most prone to abusing this have their monopoly in the most populated parts of the USA. Hopefully more and more places get Verizon and AT&T gigabit, and hopefully Time Warner stops advertising 60Mbps as super speed

This is exactly what I thought, when I heard May's proposal. When the government gets to regulate the internet, there will be selective censorship in place, aka, what suits them. She can talk all she wants about hate speech, terrorism and the usual, but the truth is, if they get back in and implement this, bye bye free internet. No more real news, no more are you allowed to speak your mind (well, you might be able to, but nobody can actually see/find it online).

It is exactly like you said, China-like situation, where you can't find information online about certain historical events etc, and probably nothing negative about their adminstartion either.

Good luck trying to find unbiased and negative opinions about the Convervative party if this is implemented.

Also, they keep on about banning?? porn or something, what in the hell is that going to achieve? I know, rape-rates going up, that's what.

Just checked and yeah, don't think they got sued.

Thing is though, now it means the ISPs can throttle stuff and not have any consequence. Before, they couldn't take it too far or there would be repercussions. Now, there are none. I wouldn't be too surprised if we might see more stuff throttled.

No, they couldn't charge companies to avoid throttling. They were free to throttle all they wanted otherwise, and when it comes right down to it, most consumers have zero idea if the content is being artificially throttled or if there is a bottleneck somewhere during peak usage hours on the servers that they're accessing.

You don't have to. Net neutrality benefits consumers, but it's not directly about consumers. It is about keeping a leveled field for content providers.

The idea that it would be "you vs. Verizon" is ridiculous. Under net neutrality, it would be Netflix vs. Verizon, Google vs. Comcast, etc., since the infringement would be to take money from Google for throttling Netflix and speeding up Youtube, and the like. Not to mention the ISPs that also act as cable TV suppliers.

They are not removing consumer protection directly, they are fucking up competition policy and allowing for all sorts of market failures. We'll suffer the consequences indirectly down the line.

While this is not fantastic and all, there are far worse things happening in America right now than this. Net neutrality wasn't a thing for very long and it was literally useless for the vast majority of individual citizens. I would be far more worried about the great internet wall rising in the UK because it actually will limit "internet freedom". Hopefully the next time the blue team takes office they will create regulatory legislation that actually benefits the end consumer.

I would also like everyone to keep in mind that the FCC considered overturning Net Neutrality under the last administration. It doesn't matter which party is in office, the big companies will prevent real legislation from existing because the politicians in these agencies have a monetary interest in them regardless of ideological stance.
