Install mobaXterm for windows and you don't really need to touch any of the settings inside it. By default settings, a X display server (:0.0) is started when you run mobaXterm.

 

In the bash on Ubuntu I used command "export DISPLAY=:0.0", which tells the Ubuntu where it should connect the display output, otherwise it will complain it cannot open up a display. If you don't use the export command, you need to do the command "DISPLAY=:0.0" everytime you open the bash.

 

So with this configuration, just open the mobaXterm and then you can run Linux gui aps from the bash on Ubuntu. It's not officially supported, but works in this case. I tried some games, but they fail to run because the audio side is not working. Firefox also runs great.

this is pretty nice but id rather have a Wine version that worked better so i could use Linux as my main OS and run Windows apps just fine from it tbh. not a fan of the route Windows has been heading with windows 10 for the mostpart, i love the UI but i dont think anyone is a fan of the crappy services that use 100% of some peoples disk or all the basically spyware and the programs that get auto installed are another part i really dont enjoy -_- 

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

I'm a big Linux user, but I must say that Windows is still better solution for any non-productive tasks. Over the years I realize that I got used to making tradeoffs, accepting bad performances/crashes, and making tweaks every time. The most recent example is I just have to redownload 24GB for a Steam which wouldn't run. Therefore I think using Linux from Monday-Friday for productivity and Windows the weekend for non-professional tasks is the solution.

the problem with that for me is that my daily life includes running a Paladins team, so i need to be able to play game daily basically. i REALLY like Linux and i want to learn it but its just not viable for me even set it up as a dual boot. im currently in the process of trying to get Paladins to run on Linux Mint, if it works im throwing Windows out the window(lol, pun not intended) because i prefer it. Wine works fine for most things but games is what i need :(

I keep poking at the WLS but my gripes still stand:

  • I don't like that they separate the subsystem from the rest of Windows by burying the Linux / (and corresponding subdirectories) way into the depths of C:.  I'd rather see it more closely integrated with the running OS so that if I pop a bash CLI window open, I'm dumped automatically into my Windows user home directory.
  • I also don't like the reliance on that archiac CMD-style tty window.  They really have to dump that piece of trash and rewrite it from scratch.  The tty window that's included with Cygwin is vastly superior in every way.  In fact, everything about Cygwin is vastly superior.

They're getting there.  They just have some more work to do, IMHO.  I'll keep on relying on Cygwin instead.  At least for now.

I don't have much knowledge about linux, but i'm pretty sure there's a way to simple tell ubuntu to move the directory to windows when starting a new session.

lol,  no. It has to do that now a mass number of apps uses the internet in some form. Think about most of your Mobile phone apps. All these companies uses Macs, as it allows dev to have Linux backend hosted locally and their dev tool for development and testing. Installing things like Apache, and many other web related things under Windows is not easy compared on MacOS (due to its Unix backend), and Windows security blocks things from running right. The small market share of using Windows for web servers doesn't help anything for support or working on the open source project to make it better. The end result is that a great number of companies are switching to Mac, and new ones uses Macs. The whole Linux sub system is a response to this, so that Windows stays relevant and competitive in the market.

 

It's not a feature for users. It is a feature for developers.

Servers will still run Linux. The same way you don't have Mac servers running things everywhere.

Just make sure that you never ever get or use Windows 10 S.  While not really surprising, there is an article out today on Hot Hardware that you will not be able to get the Linux Distros in 10 S and that all command-line apps, shells and consoles are blocked...  I guess they won't be using these as training devices for programming in schools. Really not sure what Windows 10 S will be good for besides being a 'word processor'.
