Opera Neon, Opera's new concept browser

Opera as unveiled a new concept browser called Neon. Neon just like opera is based off of chromium but with a complete set of unique features and a stunning UI. 

 

But don't get too attached to it, opera as already confirmed that they won't be developing it further and it was just a fun project but some of the most popular feature of Neon may be expanded on opera.

 

If your are curious or want to just try a different way of browsing, Neon is available for osx and windows.

They better not, they already fucked up their mobile Browser with "new and exciting" UI so much I considered switching to Firefox (I didn't though, the bottom menu bar with tabs is too useful to get rid of). It's slowly getting better, but holy hell I miss the old one.

 

How hard is it to create a chromium based browser? I don't need fancy features, all I need are the tabs and menu on the bottom, like the edge browser when used on W10m

Been looking through the snapshots and they haven't implemented it yet. But a dev claimed that it's super complex so I don't mind waiting. However without sync I have to use Chrome.

I am all for Opera. I got hooked a couple years ago and they seem to be the best Chrome replacement. Firefox has it's place but opera as a daily driver is amazing to use. They also have way better features then chrome like dark theme, built in VPN and adblocker, and energy saver mode. It also uses about 1/900 the RAM chrome does yet it is still built off the same platform.

-Um, I'm pretty sure I've ways been able to put a custom picture/my desktop wallpaper as my background on my "start page"... Be it from Opera 12, Vivaldi and various start page extensions on other browsers.
-A sidebar? Really? Like we've seen in Opera before it moved to Chromium? Or like what we currently have in Vivaldi? And those other browsers that have it and all those extensions that adds one to a browser? As for the video player in the sidebar, why? Who needs that? Videos of what exactly? Youtube? I can just add a web panel to Vivaldi to have the exact same thing, if not better because it's like having another webpage on the side, not just a video.
-Vertical tabs, because we've obviously never been able to change where the tab bar was before in any other browser... /s

All in all, looking at the "new features" that we haven't "seen" in other browsers before, all I'm seeing is mostly features from the Opera of old and of other browsers, given a new coat of paint. Nothing new or exciting. 

I used to love Opera, then they got rid of every features that made me love it, essentially spat in the face of "power users" by getting rid of bookmarks and then to top it all off, sold to a Chinese consortium... Call me racist or a tinfoil hatter, I ain't gonna trust my personal information to a browser controlled by china. At least we have Vivaldi now... Which is honestly the true successor to Opera 12.

Meh... Vivaldi is better Opera than Opera and made by the original developers I dont see this concept go anywhere to be honest.

Dude Opera is alive and well. The only problem is most have never heard of them outside of the tech space. Much more than a reskin. A reskin doesn't use 90% less memory

Opera is nice, it has better features than Chrome for sure, but most people that use Chrome are in Google's ecosystem and rely on features like the synchronisation with their Google account. The only better thing about Chrome imo is that it auto updates its Flash plugin and has a 64 bit build.

 

I tried Opera Neon, it's still pretty bare bones and I guess that's the reason it feels very snappy. Honestly I can't see myself using it as it sacrifices usability with a pretty UI and wasted screen space.

i use Opera instead Chrome for "security" + "confiability"

Well it's a neat concept and all though using Opera as main browser and I'm happy with it. Also Vivaldi is awesome too
