Hi LTT, today I'm posting this 'poll' to see what you guys think.

 

Should YouTube allow downloading of videos (either copyrighted or non-copyrighted content.) and make this an option for every channel (ex. If you want people to download it or not).

And if it should, should it be able to the public or to YouTube Red users?

 

Would like to see some opinions! :)

Absolutely not, unless the creator allows it. For example, LTT gives the WAN Show as a Soundcloud download, but doesn't give any other videos the permission.

Well, it's not like there isn't a method of doing this already. Content creators are free to make their content available via other means (Funhaus offers their Dude Soup podcast on iTunes).

I do admit, if there was an official store to buy and download content on YouTube, I'd use the hell outta it.

Technically speaking your browser has to download the file in the first place to view it, it just does it piecemeal, so technically it isn't illegal to download unless a law has stipulations on data storage (which I doubt they do)

I didn't realise it was illegal, I've even been told to download music off YouTube for school projects in the past. Haven't done it recently though. (Please don't ban me ;))

Downloading from YouTube isn't inherently illegal, though the exact definition varies depending on where you live.  But you aren't bypassing any kind of encryption as YouTube isn't encrypted.  What you -do- with the content you ingest from YouTube could be piracy and violate copyrights but that's contextual.  That said, YouTube is under no obligation to OFFER offline downloading either.

The line between legal and illegal tends to be distributing the downloaded video, or showing it to others without content owner consent. Personal use is typically (legally) fine, though your account may be terminated by Google if they find out.

No its split between everyone viewed by red users, by view time. You still get paid if red users watch your content even if none of them are subbed to you.

I think it should be allowed, however redistribution of said content should not be.

 

Technically by watching a video, you're downloading it, it's just being stored temporarily.

 

Maybe if YouTube made a program similar to Spotify where you can stream videos online via that program, or download them to your PC to watch them offline, but not really be able to access them to redistribute them, that'd be pretty cool.

It is called piracy.

 

Same reason you can't bring a camera into a movie theater.

 

With the youtube red you are paying for the content though, so it isn't piracy.

 

Downloading them through a seperate media app, or program actually breaks several of the youtube tems and conditions.

I never sit there, I turn the speaker down and multi-task for awhile if its an ad that you can not skip.

For linus's ads,, I skip the ad after the intro, and end the video at the end of the conlcusion, or start of the final ad.

 

I remember recording radio to tape, I wonder if that was illegal too.

I also for creator having dl option enabled. But honestly YT has so poor quality that it would be better if creator would offer full quality dls. Like many indie musicians do. Having paid subscription (aka YT Red) doesn't prevent anything. Its same as with Vessel. One could still rip and reupload videos.

 

Option to cache some amount of videos would be cool. Like 7 day offline cache for selected videos. You'd need to have account and some browser addon or desktop software for it. And if you don't connect to YT after 7 days after cached video is selected, it will auto-delete.

If the creator of the video allows it then Youtube should allow it too. If your not re-uploading the video that is fine.
