I think it is okay if you're using for educational purposes or you want watch the video if you have no Internet connection. If someone downloads my videos and uploads them to his channel without my permission, I will copyright strike them. No questions asked.

Something like red is fine. I believe there's a little used option to rent/buy feature films directly from youtube. Not sure if content creators would be interested or already have a way to include this option, I know it's possible on places like vimeo.

If the creator of the video allows it then Youtube should allow it too. If your not re-uploading the video that is fine.

Partial re-uploads or even full re-uploads if you're doing comentary and such should be allowed under fair use though.

Downloading it for offline personal use is legally acceptable and perfectly permissible. However, selling or reuploading is theft, and should be treated accordingly.

It's the usage of the YT video itself. If personal use and not redistributing elsewhere should be legal maybe

It is already completely legal to download a youtube video, where you begin to run into copy-right law is if you then use that video for purposes other than private veiwing.

I've downloaded songs off of YouTube and am able to get some onto my iPhone so it's kind of illegally downloading because I am not buying the song but I can still listen to it without the creator getting revenue from views and ads.  But yeah it should be legal.  Although it's a grey area.

Let me start by saying that I download music videos (just for the music) then put it on my iPhone though iTunes. I think it should be legal, as long as the video isn't longer than 15 minutes (for both MP3 and MP4).

Quote me to see my reply!

If you download the video you aren't served ads for it. I think non-monetized videos should be freely downloadable, but downloading monetized videos cuts into the creator's profit. It's certainly not any worse than adblock, but still. With that said, if you plan to watch those videos in a place where you can't count on an internet connection, I don't think it's morally wrong to download them - you wouldn't be visiting the site anyway during that time. You could play the video in a different tab while you're downloading it (and maybe doing other things) to still give some ad revenue to the creator.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Youtube has monopolize (probably not on purpose) the Internet-Video-Hosting-Sharing-Streaming-etc-etc-kind-of-thing. So only if the relevant participant Agree, then it should be allowed. They shouldn't decide yes or no.

.

.

Well just like you decide what's best for your kids when they're still a 'kid', then hear what's their opinion when they've grown up.

My vote would be yes, for personal use and maybe free sharing with friends.  That would NOT be giving them copies, of course, but letting them watch at your house, or you taking your laptop to their house, etc.

Also for me, a primary use for downloading YT videos (or extracted audio if that's all I wanted) is being able to watch in situations when I have no internet, or don't want to use up bandwidth repeatedly on the same content, etc.

No home Internet here. Before T-mobile did their unlimited video thing, I would take my laptop to the library, download a bunch of YouTube videos, then watch them at home later. Even at 480P, YouTube eats the data.
