Microsoft Simplifies Multi-GPU Support for DirectX 12 Developers

So apparently Microsoft has decided that it wants to give devs even more multi GPU options and dial it back to easy mode, so they'll have no excuse but to implement at least a basic multi GPU mode.

The new abstraction layer will simplify the process of pooling video cards on a single system, offering a basic level of support that will bypass the use of Explicit Multi Adaptor (EMA).

This should be significantly easier to use than the two EMA modes, linked and unlinked, that users would want in DX12. Those would obviously provide much better performance but hopefully this basic mode is better than the alternative of no support where we often see having SLI/CF enabled gives you less performance than a single card.

It is worth noting that Microsoft says this is “basic multi-GPU support,” so developers will still have to use EMA if they want to integrate multiple cards to DirectX 12 and get the full potential.

This is sadly not available yet, but should hopefully be rolled out soon.

We can only hope the scaling will be reasonable although I'm not expecting miracles here; it is after all basic.

I still want my AMD and Nvidia GPU combo. It destroys everything on both sides

Well, they just tried with the whole RX 480 debacle.  They got tons of bad PR even though it doesn't really matter unless you're using a super budget MB (I know that lots of people who would buy a 480 might be on one, but not enough to flip out about).  I think that it was deceptive and the wrong way to go about it, but if they tried to do many of the things nVidia does, they'd lose some of their loyal fanbase and it'd likely be a PR disaster.

That you don't want to be on Windows 10 is fine, but don't go and complain about your favorite software no longer getting updates for your older OS. You had the choice to upgrade (unlike most Android devices and older iOS devices), it is all your own fault if you didn't.

but the thing is they are improving something that should have been there in the first place from the get go

so most of the times they don't really deserve anything more than a clap on the back

 

Arguably, regarding implicit multi adapter,

first of all I believe there was already such an option in DX12,

second of all I don't think it's Microsoft's responsibility to fix broken shit games - that should lie with developers and be the responsibility of publishers

Windows 8 on desktop should've had Start button with proper desktop start menu from the get go, yes

I'll only care when people actually start rolling out titles with DX12 support that aren't completely butchered. Performance should never go down with a new API.

BF1, people founf in the alpha graphics setting there's a dx12 slider, i seriously doubt dice would fuck that up, heck they were the only one to put mantle when that was a thing and bf4 is like the only game that actully has dx11.1 features in it that nobody else used.

I'm looking forward to see games with more full DX12 support and new API cause it's good we're moving on with better implementations. Just for devs to start utilizing it better and more.

As a long time SLI user on my fourth sli setup in a row, I really hope this leads to better multi GPU support.
