Here's my thoughts on this:

This might be a step in the right direction. On my old Samsung Galaxya and my HTC HD2 the headphone port died on both, due to the number of insertions and the contact pads wiggling around in the socket. This eliminates that problem. 

 

Yes, we now need DACs in our headphones, or in an adapter. But that ultimately gives us a little bit of extra sound 'quality' as the onboard phone DAC is no longer used and better quality DACs can be used. Omitting the 3.5mm port also gives manufacturers more space for increasing battery sizes (potentially).

 

Some people may cry foul, because the cellphone still needs an DAC/ADC combo for driving the speakers and mic inputs. But, the plus side of omitting 1 DAC output on an multi-chip package (ie: slit output,/ multiple input combo DACs and ADC) is that it could potentially be used to deliver higher bandwidth to the speaker, or higher bandwidth to the mic inputs as 1 I/O process can be used elsewhere. Given how popular HD Calling and VoLTE is becoming, more bandwidth for crystal clear calls at the hardware level would be a benefit to everyone.

This will require external DACs if they cant implement an analogue signal from the usb type c.

Meaning higher price.

On topic: Lenovo and Motorola, fucking why did you think this was a good idea.

Bluetooth APTX is pretty good, and chances are the AMP/DAC in your phone is shit too. Audio over USB-C in the long run is a much better idea, but that only pans out if the headphones you buy aren't $4.99 from WalMart. 

 

I've got an okay setup when it comes to 2-channel, but the last thing I would be doing is feeding the system using the analogue signal from my iPhone. You'd be far better off using a dock + TOSLINK to a DAC or, dare I say it, Apple Play to a DAC.

I foresee a bunch of pissed off people who have to buy a new adaptor every few weeks because they keep losing the tiny cable and can never use their headphones because they don't want to constantly carry an adaptor with them. 

 

This is the only reason I don't use my Lifeproof case as an everyday case, I don't want to carry the cable everywhere and I always misplace or forget it. I only put it on my phone when I'm going skiing, to the river, or in the backcountry. I wish I could use it as an everyday case but it's too damn impractical.

Having issues with a Corsair AIO? Possible fix here:

Are you getting weird fan behavior, speed fluctuations, and/or other issues with Link?

Are you running AIDA64, HWinfo, CAM, or HWmonitor? (ASUS suite & other monitoring software often have the same issue.)

Corsair Link has problems with some monitoring software so you may have to change some settings to get them to work smoothly.

-For AIDA64: First make sure you have the newest update installed, then, go to Preferences>Stability and make sure the "Corsair Link sensor support" box is checked and make sure the "Asetek LC sensor support" box is UNchecked.

-For HWinfo: manually disable all monitoring of the AIO sensors/components.

-For others: Disable any monitoring of Corsair AIO sensors.

That should fix the fan issue for some Corsair AIOs (H80i GT/v2, H110i GTX/H115i, H100i GTX and others made by Asetek). The problem is bad coding in Link that fights for AIO control with other programs. You can test if this worked by setting the fan speed in Link to 100%, if it doesn't fluctuate you are set and can change the curve to whatever. If that doesn't work or you're still having other issues then you probably still have a monitoring software interfering with the AIO/Link communications, find what it is and disable it.

Wow, way to only point out one thing about the device, the bad.

Personally, I'm pretty stoked on this phone, and it's actually given me another phone to consider over the Note7.

A 12ishmm thick phone with a damn near 6000mah battery? Expandable storage? AMOLED? Sign me the fuck up.

Though the camera performance will be the ultimate deal breaker for me.

Sure, it doesn't have a 3.5mm jack, but I don't mind shelling out money for a decent pair of USB C headphones to go with it.

 

We don't even know what the adapter looks like and yet everyone's crying. Maybe it won't be that bad. Perhaps it'll simply fit into a slightly longer cable. That really wouldn't be that bad.

I think 3.5mm jack will be difficult to be implemented on such a thin device hence they might have gone with USB type C. I hope Iphone will come with the jack.. I use Bluetooth  headphone that cost 100 pounds. I cannot make out difference with wired one.. maybe it is just my ears. I hope someone launches a phone with wireless charging, wireless file-transfer and bluettoth headphone only support, Port-less device..I rarely uses ports these days... relying on onedrive for data transfer,  Bluetooth headphone, Remote desktop and wireless charging

Yes, we now need DACs in our headphones, or in an adapter. I hope one day apple releases some troll rumours like "screen less smartphones" and everyone rushes out to market, and then Apple just release a normal phone and the world explodes

I can live without the 3.5mm jack(assuming USB is in its place), but do I want to? Not really. I don't see the point of replacing the 3.5mm jack. Sure its older than dinosaurs and yes it takes up more space than type-c, but its still perfectly fine as is. Replacing it with type-c(and/or lightning) and using analog will literally accomplish nothing other than regression(now you have to choose between headphones or charging/video/OTG/etc. instead of being able to use both at once) and if its using digital all it will do is make headphones more expensive(and potentially make headphones sound fucky with built in "3D effects". Also after the dac its back to analog, so uh... yeah...). I could use bluetooth, but there is a compromise of sound quality there, and its open to interference(ie my work where wifi and bt barely even function) and then I would have to charge the battery on those headphones too. Going back to analog, if there are type-c to 3.5mm adapters then all of this seems redundant(whoopty do, you increased my cable length by 8cm and cost by 10€, when I needed neither...).

 

My thoughts: Why? What was so wrong with 3.5mm TRRS that it needed to be replaced? It seems like moving to type-c is solving a non-existent problem("lets do it because we can!") while creating more problems. If there was a transitioning period where you could either use type-c/lightning or 3.5mm and if multiple product categories followed(PC's/game consoles/home-audio/etc.) then I wouldn't be as salty, but I don't have any type-c headphones(go figure...) and don't want to replace my headphones either... or more likely I just won't buy the Moto Z and any other phone that follows suit, unless if the industry merges in a way that doesn't screw the consumer over.
