The New Moto Z doesn't have a 3.5mm headphone jack - USB-C to headphone adapter instead

Lenovo and Motorola unveiled the 2016 Moto flagships today at Tech World with a line of modular back plates and a few months of Verizon exclusivity (boo). That's not the only thing to be annoyed about. According to Motorola's spec sheet for the Moto Z devices, it only does audio over the Type-C port. We've checked out the device in real life to confirm, and there's no headphone jack to be found. This does not seem like a good idea.

The Droid-branded versions of the phones will come out first, and right there on the spec sheet is the following...

This isn't the first attempt to do away with the venerable headphone jack. LeEco announced a few jack-less phones recently, and there have been rumors that Apple would ditch the port as well. TheOppo R5 also lacked a headphone jack. However, the Moto Z is by far the most mainstream phone to skip the standard 3.5mm jack.

Type-C headphones do exist, but they're extremely rare. Regular headphone jacks are everywhere still. Thus, Moto Z owners will be stuck using the adapter or Bluetooth for audio. Maybe that will be alright for some people, but I imagine there will still be plenty of times the lack of a 3.5mm jack will be a major annoyance.

Appears that the Moto Z is one of the first flagships to not get a headphone jack. Whether Apple will follow that remains to be seen, but I won't be surprised if they do in the end...

wow, i think apple has started a trend. i don't understand why people need to stop providing 3.5mm jacks. they're absolutely essential for those who have earphones really.

Tell me, what's the advantage of USB-C headphones (or wireless ones for that matter) over the industry standard 3.5mm? Better sound quality? Nope, depends on the audio source and in everyday life you wouldn't hear the difference anyway. Wireless headphones suffer from interference no matter how good they are from other wireless sources and battery life on the things in general is poop.

Yay, it's catching on! I'm no audiophile, so I'm perfectly happy to use bluetooth and have done so for about 5 years now.

Hopefully this will make the audio in my car playable from my phone without me having to screw with the input and almost wreck every time I wanna play a song.

The force does has the headphone jack at least, though is a bit of bs that you have to pay more for the force to get the jack built into the handset itself and not in an external adapter. (nvm the force also lacks the jack) Another thing that i dont like is the jump to 5.5" screen, not my liking though i have to say the force plus the mod battery pack has me tempted, 3500mha + 2250mha sounds amazing and the pack itself doesn't make the phone that much bulkier.

What exactly is the benefit to this USB-c? Is it like moving from analog to digital or something? And what exactly does that mean for quality, price etc...

All sources I can find say the Z Force also omits the headphone jack.

Ok, doing this is retarded. All headphones are at the end of the day analogue. This means that the adaptor will need a DAC (which add bulk), and fucking having to carry around adaptors negates the benefit of making a device thinner.

I was thinking the same thing. Apple is almost at the point where they could just make crap up, "leak" it, and have a handful of other manufacturers waste money trying to beat apple to it when there was no intention of doing it in the first place.

3.5mm is already a fragile connector in my experience, now you want to make it extra fragile by placing some connector inbetween it... this can't end well
