AMD's Zen and Intel Kaby lake CPUs are reportedly delayed

Hopefully this isnt true,  but it seems both amd and intel are facing issues with lithography.

Ehm, it is even worse for AMD then.....but it was already rumoured or half-officialy told by AMD that there are delays.

As for Intel: They bring every year something new, so no big deal. And if they delay it for the sake of to big stock of Haswell and Skylake, then alas, they wait for a good moment to push new technology. (Waiting for AMD?)

Have there been any corroborating reports for this? Everybody is pointing to Digitimes, and they aren't providing sources.

Haswell is still widely available, which can't be great given we're two generations on from that (Broadwell, Skylake). Still, not a good sign either if they're intentionally slowing down for non-technical reasons.

 

Zen... can we really say they're late? Well, have AMD outright said they will be launching their next gen CPU at a specific date? The longer we have to wait, the worse it might be for them as Intel isn't standing still. (or are they?)

Isn't AMD sampling Zen in a few weeks? The only reason I can see them delaying is supply issues.

Well it was already planed for Q4 (after what we know), so a delay to Q1/2017 would be still in their roadmap....

There's very little to go on this, especially when other rumours, and official AMD statements, say that AMD is still on track and on schedule.

 

If they can provide something more substantial, or other "sources" also start hearing the same thing, then I'll start to take it a bit more seriously.

 

Otherwise, I'm putting this in the "AMD Doom and Gloom rumours to be taken with a grain of salt" corner.

Intel's Skylake CPU's has been very expensive with little added performance/features to show for it, so it would not be a surprise if Intel has built up a big stock they find hard to sell.

But it makes zero sense for AMD to do the same. ZEN with 8 core/16 threads does not clash with any existing product SKU from AMD, thus it cannot cannibalize any other AMD products, but only compute with Intel products. So the argument that stock plays a role for AMD is nonsensical.

I do imagine that once Zen hits, we're going to see the Bulldozer based AMD chips being sold off at literally bargain bin pricing. They're still relatively expensive to manufacture - although since the Node is so damn old, AMD have likely optimized the fuck out of it. Never the less, AND will want to get rid of as much older gen stuff as humanly possible in anticipation of the eventual release of their lower end Zen CPU's and APU's.

I don't see them do this until they have smaller ZEN models ready. Of course when they do, they want the old models to be sold out by the time the new smaller zen chips launches. However the notion that AMD would postpone ZEN due to their stock of products makes no sense.

I agree - if Zen is late, it'll be because of supply, manufacturing, or engineering reasons. But I don't believe it.

Polaris clocks has already been shown to be 1200MHz or higher at live demos.
