Eh I'm fine with my X360 wired controller, I actually just picked up a PS4 controller and a Gamecube+Mayflash adapter, both going to be used for emulation. Love them both already.

 

I've tried using a Xbone controller, it just feels too...sharp? I don't know how to explain, it just feels way off than what the X360 controllers feel like, definitely not in my comfort zone.

This was bound to happen. I mean joysticks and stearing wheels have had a huge quality improvement years ago. Controlers had to come next. I find this a good thing since it will bring inovation and lower prices in the end.

Laptop: Lenovo Y510p, i7-4700HQ, 12 GB (8+4) 1600MHz DDR3 RAM, GT755 2GB SLI graphis card, 1366x768 display.

I'm feeling positive today (I know, disgusting) So I think this is positive to prepare console buyers to get incremental upgrades: the xbone elite should actually have more horse power and set itself to higher settings while games can scale between skus.

That's far more work and basically a PC. You know as well as I that is not how the console market works.

I don't get why you'd spend £150ish on this controller when plenty of companies sell their own custom controllers that are just as good in quality for a much lower price.

 

the only other company that can rival the Elite's quality is Scuf and they're actually pricier.

 

On another note, if I didn't stray away from console gaming I would have purchased this controller. It's no different from my mechy with browns. A mesh keyboard would have suited me just fine if I wanted basic things but the thing is, I don't want basic things.

So my takeaway from the story

Scuf have patents on an xbox controller, the patent system is interesting...

Microsoft have the patent for the controller, Scuf have patents for modifications to said controller but without microsofts initial controller scuf wouldn't have anything to modify in the first place.

I understand it's reasonable and it's business but I still think it's hilarious

Same goes with Mophie's patents for an iPhone battery case, which resulted in Apple's battery case - an abysmal attempt to get around Mophie's patents.

Apple isn't tasteless. They know the design of that case was atrocious. But Mophie had the "good" design for a battery case patented up, down, and sideways, so Apple was forced into it.

I have one and still think the price was too much but that doesn't mean I don't like it. I just wish ABXY were mechanical like on the Razer Xbox controllers I'm too used to that. I also wish there were more options for the paddles. Think they could be 3D printed?

It just the patents really the build and button style id different. Putting that branding with the marketing was probably agreed on as part of payment.

so me they seem to have a cheaper build when it comes to materials and a worse design in general. Only reason MS has to pay them anything is they have the patents on the idea.

I totally want one of these....so much so that I'll likely buy a second hand Xbox to save money, and buy one to compliment it.

 

 

I can't imagine the abxy feel fundamentally different with the elite controller as does a mechanical keyboard and a decent mouse.

 

The trash dpad is a different story though.

There's much more to it than that, you get replaceable thumb sticks, as well as the additional bumpers on the bottom and the adjustable triggers. Also, the software.
Luke said he'd pay the extra just for the triggers alone, and I'd probably have to agree.

I still think they should overhaul it so that companies can't patent something and then do absolutely nothing with it.

 

But is it worth that much? I seriously doubt it.

Worth is a pretty subjective term. Nothing is really "worth" what it costs.

Clearly this is, judging by sales and demand metrics.

 

Eh I'm fine with my X360 wired controller, I actually just picked up a PS4 controller and a Gamecube+Mayflash adapter, both going to be used for emulation. Love them both already.

 

I've tried using a Xbone controller, it just feels too...sharp? I don't know how to explain, it just feels way off than what the X360 controllers feel like, definitely not in my comfort zone.

I totally know what you mean, the first time I used my buddies it was horrific. You get used to it after a while, much like anything else.

Mmmm, see usually I'd agree, but they are the designers that decided to make a wireless mouse with the charging port on the bottom...

Better quality, perhaps, but I don't think nearly as useful. The bottom bumpers are just additional top buttons (they mirror them), where as on the Elite I believe they're completely different and programmable with software. Sort of becomes a form or function argument.

I also like Microsoft's version of the bumper control better.
