1) Gaming is more than a decade away from having sufficient power to be run on a tablet, despite Nvidia's advancement with Tegra if you wanted to truly game you'd kill battery in a hurry and it's a fraction of the power of even a mid range card like the 950 or the 370

 

2) No office employee is gonna give up a physical keyboard, and because of that obviously a full sized one is always preferrable, so no amount of touch control bullshit keyboards will be adequate for most office tasks

 

3) IT personnel, content creators, programmers, people using workstations.

 

Those 3 basically gave birth to the PC and will continue to do so for at least another decade or two. Folks at home are well served with a tablet which was Cook's point, minus the stupid hyperbole.

For $85 I could get 3GB, at $90 I can get 5GB. This is before tax.

Pc's aren't going anywhere yet, but their roll will likely be only found in enthusiasts or in a work environment. Your average Joe Shmo probably only needs the power of a tablet. General web browsing, watching videos, and basic productivity is easily accomplished by a tablet or a thin and light laptop. The big tower pc is pretty much dead to the general population.

My dad uses his laptop quite a lot. My mom uses her on occasion. My brother is almost always on his desktop. And I'm almost always on my laptop. My little brother is the only person in the house without a laptop or desktop as he uses his iPod touch and Xbox for the most part.

Your provider covered the whole cost? In Canada only half the phone is covered and the rest is upfront for phones like iPhones. All the plans I quoted are if you already have a device.

Microsofts new tablet PC with nvidia GPU is exactly where portable computers need to be going. A VERY powerful PC when it needs to be in a small form factor. NOT macbooks that can be outperformed by a cellphone.

post-PC era does not mean PCs are obsolete. It just means the dependency of them decreases significantly as mobile devices become more and more powerful and more importantly, accessible. There will always be a need for PCs, that's why Apple still sells them.

If you have nothing important to do then yeah, sure, go ahead. Get the iPad. It'll keep your mind numbed every minute of the entire day. It'll even let you believe you are creative by letting you paint with your fingers, or even a pencil. (they wouldn't call it a stylus after having categorically stated you don't need one of those, now, would they?) If you intend to use it solely for such mundane tasks as media consumption and social networking and the occasional crudely developed yet cleverly marketed and addictive mobile game, preferably not simultaneously because neither the device nor your brain can really do that very well, then sure, the iPad, or indeed any other tablet or even a phone, is the device for you. 

 

If however you do have a brain that needs more complex tasks to keep itself entertained, say you like software development, are into image manipulation, or appreciate the sheer amount of artwork that goes into the interactive entertainment that really needs more computational horsepower to reach its full potential than the thermal dissipation limitation of a handheld device can provide, you need a pc.

Do we buy 100W TDP processors because what we really want is portability? NO!

Do we get dedicated graphics because Candy Crush is all we need and it's that demanding? HELL NO!

Do we install a multi-monitor setup because we could have done the same tasks equally efficiently by swiping back and forth on a 12 inch screen? FUCK NO!

Do we buy mechanical keyboards because on-screen keyboards are adequate? I think not.

Do we have high-end mice because a capacitive touch screen offers all the pixel-perfect precision man could ever need? NO, OF COURSE NOT, MAN, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?

 

I've had it with people putting the word "smart" in front of everything even though the machines are still dumb as fuck. A piece of cardboard wrapped in cloth (Some might call it a smart cover...) is meant to pass as a device that turns a tablet into device that can genuinely do everything and no one seems to raise the point that that's just not good enough. More and more we're being fed technology that's dependent on some server on the other side of the Internet to do the tasks that our machines used to be able to do on their own for them. It's sad to see that the world we live in has us believe these things are a step in the right direction and a viable replacement for a proper computer, which it can be, for some people, don't get me wrong, but for the kind of person who knows what he's doing it really isn't.

 

At least he's talking sense when it comes to encryption. The British really should listen to that part.
