First Performance Results of Radeon R9 380X Close to 290

A while ago, rumors surfaced about a supposed new GPU in AMD’s R9 3xx series which was going to improve the company’s position in the GPU market. Many people had their hopes tied to expected R9 380X GPU but if these recent leaks are to be believed, those hopes will be shattered soon due to the disappointing performance of the GPU.

While featuring a complete new design and an improved Antigua XT core with 2048 shaders, the clock speeds and 3D Mark score seem to be quite low, atleast for the model created by a Chinese brand, ColorFire. This version of the GPU is expected to be working at 1070MHz GPU clock speed and 1500MHz memory clock.

The 3D Mark 11 Extreme mode score of the GPU was based on a system with 3rd generation Core i5 processors and the score seems to be 4024, between Radeon R9 280X and R9 290, although closer to R9 290.

Judging by this, it seems as AMD continues to disappoint with its new generation GPUs especially if their performance is going to be similar to the old generation even though they are more expensive.

Whether these rumors are true or not remains to be seen as does the success of R9 380X which will ultimately boil down to price-performance ratio. If the GPU ends up delivering the same performance as a R9 290 while being cheaper, it will most definitely make a splash in the GPU market and might improve AMD’s position after their considerable losses this year.

The author of this article is delusional if he thinks these results are disappointing but this was the only other article that mentioned this benchmark other than the original source (which is in another language I cannot recognise). This is good, now we just need some game benchmarks and a price.

That's pretty good performance if you ask me, as you pointed out the articles writer is deluded if he thinks that score is bad, as AMD don't want a card too close to the 290/390 as it might undermine sales of it, like if the 960 was too close in performance to the 970.

Now if AMD drops the price on the 380 just enough to compete with the 950. Then Nvidia will have no offerings what so ever on the market other then the 980Ti and Titan X. Which should get demolished by the Fury X2 that is due to release soon

Yea, that's why everyone and their grandmother was asking when Nvidia would release a 960 ti to fill the enormous performance gap between the 960 and 970 right? You're just mad that AMD is filling it and Nvidia hasn't. Or maybe in your fanboy mind, if the Nvidia doesn't have a card there, it's not a bracket that's meant to be filled. The diference between the 960/380 and 970/390 is equivalent to a 780 and 760. I'm guessing you think the 770 should never have existed?

Um, I need to get off this off-topicness. I like the 380x pretty well, and it seems AMD is more or less covering all the possible price brackets with their graphics cards. Bravo, AMD!
