Windows in Windows in Windows, thanks Windows 10

The Benjamins

Windows 10 insider preveiw now supports nested virtual machines in virtual machines. That is so cool, not sure how useful though.

Call it Windows Inception. Microsoft has revealed that the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview supports nested virtualization, which lets you launch a virtual machine within another virtual machine -- yes, you can run Windows inside of Windows inside of Windows. The trick is a new feature that supports hardware-based virtualization within a primary virtual machine, providing for that one extra layer. There are limits, of course. Features like dynamic memory won't work, and nesting currently requires an Intel processor with VT-x support (most chips from the past several years will do). So long as everything lines up, though, you too can create a hall of mirrors effect on your PC -- even if it doesn't serve much of a practical purpose.

Under the hood

Consider the diagram below, which shows the “normal” (i.e. non-nested) case. The Hyper-V hypervisor takes full control of virtualization extensions (orange arrow), and does not expose them to the guest OS.

nestedDiagram.png

Contrast this with the nested diagram below. In this case, Hyper-V has been configured to expose virtualization extensions to its guest VM. A guest VM can take advantage of this, and install its own hypervisor. It can then run its own guest VMs.

so.. for school OS class, we had to create a virtualisation server pool... in virtual machines.

would be nice if it actually worked decently..

sadly as of now you need the newest version of hyper-V in the first VM too so you can do this yet. the Microsoft blog post explains a lot.

Hyper-V has 3d open-gl or cl support, but for games I am not sure. I dont know if you can pass a GPU to the VM.

Darn, I want to do that now!

Though, I don't have access to a Windows 10 machine that is powerful enough to run a VM efficiently, and I don't know any ways currently to induce a BSOD on it since I can't overclock. Maybe there's some program...

Why is the God of Hyperdeath SO...DARN...CUTE!?

Also, if anyone has their mind corrupted by an anthropomorphic black latex bat, please let me know. I would like to join you.

It isn't impressive at all...

Windows in windows in windows, all of it in Linux who has been doing this shit for decades. And you can thank people like VMWare for that, not Microsoft.

So......Microsoft create a useless feature for Windows 10 instead of a useful one that allows the ability to easily pass through a GPU to the VM.
