Authorities in Norway have told users of the popular pirate streaming service Popcorn Time to expect “a surprise in the mail,” after the Rights Alliance claims it has has gathered data on 51,000-75,000 users of the site.

 
The question is, what will the organization decide to do with this information?
 
The Rights Alliance is legally allowed to monitor people it suspects to be pirating. However, monitoring IP addresses is one thing, it would need to go through the courts to be allowed collaborate with ISPs to obtain the names and addresses behind them.
 
It seems counterproductive to grant organizations like the Rights Alliance permission to harvest IP addresses, but make finding out the people behind them an ordeal.
 
 
 
That being said, it has made progress in the last month despite the obstacles, making arrests in Denmark after two men were found to be explaining how to use Popcorn Time on their sites.
 
It’s less than 18 months since the controversial Popcorn Time launched and it’s had to face a lot of scrutiny from authorities in Europe and the US already, but if it continues to outsmart them by routing whatever the anti-piracy groups do to stop it, then I’d expect it to be around for a long time to come.

So... authorities are wasting time and effort sending letters to people who may or may not have been using one of hundreds of thousands of dynamic IP addresses? How is this even news? The headline might as well have said: "Authorities know that somewhere in the world someone may have committed a crime but they have no proof so will therefore send everyone in the world a mean letter telling them to feel bad about the crime that they have no proof anyone committed".

This is blown out of proportion, the news papers quoted the people behind this as saying "we will try to avoid punishing end users"

 

What they are probably doing is a last warning type thing.

 

That said, I never used popcorn time and don't intend to.

do you guys really think that if you have a dynamic ip address you're untrackable? and that they need to find out who was sitting in front of the computer downloading movies?

 

ISPs know exactly who had ip address X at time Y, and the rights alliance simply needs to sue the fuck out of whoever signed the contract with the ISP.

the very minor percentage of those 75k users who was behind a VPN may be safer, but guys don't think that you're the uncatchable masters of the internet because you downloaded a vpn client and pushed a button.

If challenge in court, it will fail.

Sorry guys but they arent retaliating against persons here, once they detect an IP at a certain household pirating it doesnt matter who downloaded your kid your neighbour stealing wifi, they will send fines or cut the internet to the person who owns the internet contract.

Deal with it.

Whats annoying is that they only target poporcn time users while the rest of the pirates are free? so much for justice.

This seems like wasted taxpayer $$$, when actual shit can be done.

The reason they gotta be 100% sure of person/location using IP first is that during the TPB incident. Telenor, the largest telecom company in norway, litterally told the hollywood studios to fuck off when they tried to lobby for the ability to "sue everyone they think is pirating". The studios were told to have concrete evidence or GTFO.

Seems like they learnt from that incident.

Still, IP in this day and age doesnt mean a damn shit....

Crime exist primarily because the incentives to act or operate within the law simply arent there or arent good enough.

Look how pirating of games and music has dropped steadily as steam and spotify has made huge progress in getting products to the market for cheap AND legal.

Movie pirating dropped after netflix, HBO, Hulu and other similar services caught on...

If you want to make money and stop pirating, you just got to sell the product in another way or format so that people are motivated to buy rather then steal.

I mean Honestly since music Streaming became a thing years ago i haven't pirated music at all and have probably paid a couple hundred in Subscriptions where before i Pirated every single song i had and spent 0 dollars, Netflix and similar services have massively cut down my Pirating of shows and movies, Cable TV is absolutely garbage in Quality and ease of access   i HATE using the cable box my provider gives out its the slowest laggiest pos that im way overcharged for.... There will always be pirates just like there is always people stealing stuff in stores but If they change the way they sell there content and invest money in a better end user experience then i think they would see much better results in overall pirating going down.
