Apple Worldwide Developers Conference: June 2015

The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference has started today and will take place between 8th-12th June at Moscone West in San Francisco. Typically, the Keynote takes place on the first day of WWDC whilst the other days consist of the developers trying the new technologies as well as taking the experience and knowledge of the team at Apple for assistance in working with the new software. Be sure to keep yourself updated on this thread for the latest on what's going on (especially during the Keynote) and also make sure to stick around for the Overview Post at the end of the Keynote...

What To Expect

Mac OSX 10.11

OSX 10.11 is expected to introduce a variety of bug fixes, security features and stability improvements over OSX 10.10 Yosemite. According to MacRumors, Apple is rumored to be working on a new kernel-level security system called "Rootless".  Rootless will be designed to help limit malware from causing issues by preventing access to protected system files. Apple may also make some changes to IMAP-based apps such as Notes, Reminder and Calendars and put them on the iCloud Drive system to help increase security and aid the communication of different Apps.

It's also believed that OSX 10.11 will have a new Control Center that resembles that of iOS with tools such as Wifi, Bluetooth and Do Not Disturb. Also, OSX may see the introduction of the San Francisco font, which was originally designed for the Apple Watch...

iOS 9

According to MacRumors, it's believed that iOS 9 shall feature a new lifestyle management feature called "Proactive". The rumors tell us that it replaces the iOS Spotlight Search with more advanced search features to as well as a new UI to display content from different Apps such as Contacts and Maps.

We're also led to believe that iOS 9 will see some Map improvements, which include the addition of transit directions, an augmented reality view as well as a "Browse Around Me" Points of Interest System...

As well as this, it's said that iOS 9 shall include tools for Force Touch, which is believed to suggest that next-gen iOS devices will support this feature, which may also have several important security improvements. Like OSX 10.11, we expect to see the new San Francisco font become system wide as well as split-screen Multitasking and a new, revamped keyboard.

New Streaming Music Service

It has been suggested that Apple will debut its new, streaming music service at WWDC. It's believed to be a re-branded version of their existing Beats Music Service and would be likely to appear in iTunes and the iOS Music App. Rumors tell us that it'll be priced at the industry standard of $9.99 (USD) like other competing services. The service is not complete yet and Apple is still trying to complete the deals for the service, but it's believed that it will be Introduced at WWDC...

iTunes Radio

We saw the introduction of iTunes Radio several years ago and it's been understood that Apple is planned on introducing a new version of iTunes Radio. It's designed to complement the new music service, giving people a way to listen to music for free (much like Spotify). What would be nice to see is if Apple will begin to roll it out to more countries...

Native Apple Watch Apps

Since the launch of the Apple Watch, the Apps have been limited to running through a paired iPhone in order to be able to access then. However, it's believed that developers shall be provided with updated tools that'll help them be able to create native Apps for the Apple Watch...

Apple Pay

There is a possibility that Apple may make some Apply Pay announcements at WWDC. MacRumors suggested that a new rewards program may be introduced for the payments service, but information is few and far between! There is a chance that Apple will announce the expansion of additional countries, starting with Canada.

HomeKit

HomeKit is Apple's home automation platform which was first introduced at last year's WWDC. The HomeKit Platform will allow various connected devices to be adjusted from your iOS Device, such as Thermostats, Locks, etc... It's believed that the App will be called "Home" and may be introduced as part of iOS 9...

The Keynote

The Apple Keynote takes place on the first day of WWDC and is streamed via the Apple Website as well as through some Third Party Sources (which we are not aware of yet)...

Stream Requirements

To view the Live Stream on Apple.com, your system must reach these requirements:

- Safari 6.0.5 or later on Mac OSX 10.8.5 or later.

- Safari on iOS 6.0 or later.

- Apple TV Streaming required 2nd/3rd Gen Device with Software 6.2 or later.

For people without the correct devices and/or software, you will not be able to view the Keynote from the Apple Website. However, when I become aware of a secure third party link, I shall include the URL. Based on last year, VLC Media Player may be required...

Please note that it's common for the Apple Live Stream to be buggy or not work at all, this is a known issue, so please expect some downtime (last year's WWDC was especially buggy).

WWDC 2015: Overview

So, we saw several new things from Apple this year's Keynote for WWDC, let's recap on what's new...

Mac OSX 10.11 'El Capitan'

Apple made it known that the new version of Mac OSX would be called 'El Capitan', which confirms our suspicions that they've moved away from the big cat generation of OS names. However, we saw several nice, new features within. Some of these include:

- New Swipe Commands & Tabs within the Mail App.

- Pinned Sites & Tab Mute Function within Safari.

- Improvements to Spotlight with new a new User Interface and features such as Natural Language Search.

- Mission Control has been greatly improved, now being smoother, cleaner and better optimized.

- Side-by-Side Window Management is now an integrated feature in OSX.

- Many performance improvements made.

- Metal for OSX. Improved rendering performance by 50% and 40% improved rendering efficiency as well as 10x performance improvements in games.

There will be a Public Beta that is released in July with a free, full release in the Autumn.

iOS 9

iOS 9 is more of a face lift compared to the extensive updates that both iOS 7 and iOS 8 were. One thing that many will rejoice about is the fact that the iOS 9 Download File will be only 1.3GB! Let's take a look at some of the new features...

- General improvements to Siri.

- Quicktype Keyboard, with a tool bar for different features/tools (eg. Cut, Copy, Paste).

- Multitasking has a new UI as well as new gestures for side-by-side app viewing (iPad only).

- Unknown Phone Numbers will attempt to be identified by E-Mail Contact Details.

- Spotlight is heavily improved with a new User Interface and API Search.

- Will automatically note in calendar any invitations you receive.

- Offers most common Apps depending on which you use at certain times of day.

- Battery optimizations made in iOS 9.

- Large improvements to Apple CarPlay.

- Variety of improvements to Maps App, with the introduction of "Transit".

- New App called 'News', that allows you to personalize what stories you want to know.

- Swift will now be open source.

Unlike OSX 'El Capitan', we was provided a list of compatible devices for iOS 9 - these are: iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad Mini, iPad Mini 2, iPad Mini 3, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and iPod Touch 5th Generation. The Public Beta will be available in July, with the Full Release coming in the Autumn.

Apple Pay

Apple Pay was also discussed during the Keynote, although there wasn't quite as much to talk about. Still, this is an overall roundup of what's being planned:

- Expansion of Apple Pay to the United Kingdom. Introduction coming in July!

- The 'Passbook' App is now known as 'Wallet'.

- Apple Pay will include support for Store Cars, Loyalty Cards and Rewards Cards.

WatchOS

WatchOS launched alongside the introduction of the Apple Watch and is set to receive its first major update. Some of the new features include:

- Introduction of Native Apps for WatchOS.

- Timepiece includes a variety of new watch faces (such as PhotoFace) with Complications.

- Wallet will become a usable feature within WatchOS.

- Siri is more advanced and works alongside your iPhone.

- Your Apple Watch will remain paired with your iPhone as long as they're on the same Wifi Network.

The Developer Beta will be available today (8th June 2015) with the Full Release becoming available in the Autumn.

Apple Music

Apple Music is probably the thing that people have been most intrigued about, here's what you need to know:

- It's designed to be a 'Revolutionary Music Service'.

- A 24/7 Global Radio Station called Beats1 will be available with Ex-Radio 1 Presenter, Zane Lowe.

- Search & Stream Music from iTunes within the Music App.

"For You" is a personalized selection of music based on songs/artists that you listen to.

"New" allows you to discover new songs/artists as well as new Chart Music.

"Connect"  allows the Artist to connect with fans, and for them to Like and Comment on the Artist's Posts.

- New Mini PLayer within the Music App on iOS will show when music is playing.

Apple Music shall be launching on Tuesday 30th June 2015 for Mac OSX, iOS, Microsoft Windows and Android. It will cost $9.99 per month or $14.99 for families of up to 6 people. However, Apple are providing Apple Music for FREE for the first 3 months (although we believe this offer will not be lasting too long).

So, that's about all you need to know from this year's Keynote for the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2015. This year mainly was home to Software Updates and developments in Music compared to the last few years with the introduction of the Apple Watch and Mac Pro. Still, let's wait for the Apple Worldwide Consumers Conference to see what they have to offer us!

I'm hoping for a new generation of iPod Touch to be announced actually. Saying the current 5th Generation is running the same hardware specifications as the iPhone 4s (which will probably be pulled from iOS 9 Support), I can see the 5G being pulled also! So I'm hoping for a newer iPod Touch to upgrade to...  :P

The reason for calling it an "Official Thread" isn't for that, it was in the intention to keep all WWDC 2015 content to one thread that allows people to more easily find their information instead of things being scattered about the Forums!  ;)

A new iPod would be nice but I doubt they will release one. Although I really would like one for the boat.

I wouldn't say that's whining, I think it's a valid point! I'd find it really useful for them to allow other devices to stream the Keynote - as in my circumstance, my MacBook currently has a broken MagSafe Connector, so I'm stuck to viewing on the iPod...

We'll have to wait and see. Apple have coughed up several surprises at WWDCs in the past, with the MacBook Pro in 2006, and the Mac Pro back in 2013!

Indeed, I really find it annoying having content scattered everywhere, and not being in one place.. Hence why I launched this thread!

Victorious Secret will have a full on seizure if he knew somebody beat him to a WWDC thread

You're assuming that I'm that petty. I'd rather have anyone make a cohesive thread with all the updates and I'm glad OP did.

Rather him than the constant shitposters who can't put two words together to make a good thread.

Not worth running some janky stream, use this:

Windows/Android

The live stream officially works only on the Mac and iOS devices. However, you can use the following workaround to watch the WWDC 2015 live stream on Windows or even on an Android device:

Please note that the live stream url may appear broken until it is has started. Refresh the stream when the video has begun (at 10am PDT or 1:00 pm ET) and everything should work fine.

@SamNeedham123 here is the additional stream for your OP, for those not on iOS/OSX devices

I'm watching the Apple stream and Verge, so I'll probably just grab stuff off the Verge stream since its already uploaded and don't need to start knocking off screenshots. We can figure out a better way to organize all the information once the event is over I guess
